Today I lost internet and now Bing isn't working.

Today I lost internet service around 930 am and it's been spotty since, keeps cutting out. Some of that maybe everyone trying to get online to their stock websites which I also had trouble with. But now the search engine bing isn't working.

Is there a hack or something?
 

I've no idea (you don't say where you are, and whom your provider is).

That said, it depends on why your internet went down. For example, and not to get overly technical, but when you type say, "www.bing.com" into your browser (or click a link) that request is sent out from your computer. However, the underlying internet does not know what that means. So it has to take that request and find out the IP address associated with it. This is achieved through querying a Domain Name Server (DNS), which in simple terms has a long list of name to IP address mappings.

Now, if you can't access a DNS server for some reason, your connection will effectively be down. Typing for Bing won't resolve, and you won't be able to access anything. That's because the systems can figure out the IP address it needs. If your problem was rooted in difficulty accessing a DNS server, then you might indeed find that sites don't work. Also, as it comes back online, it becomes inundated by requests, and you might find some sites work and some don't.

A common way to cripple the internet is what is called a Domain Service Attack. This is basically sending an overwhelming number of requests to DNS servers so they don't have time to respond to legitimate requests. This whole thing is also made far more complicated by big business (such as Bing) who have their own, complex, infrastructure in place when you hit their site.

I forget the exact message on the screen but essentially said bing is down. Found other websites worked including duckduckgo so I went to one of those sites 'Is it down or me' a message said they've been getting reports over the last hour.

Honestly, the problem could be one of many things. It's a bit like saying your car has a squeak, it could be anything and anywhere. My internet switched off for five minutes the other day - it felt like a lifetime. :D

From the link in the post above in MSN quoting The Daily Mail. It's dated an hour ago as I write this.

Google is experiencing a worldwide outage that has taken out its search engine, YouTube and other services.

Issues began around 9am ET and are plaguing users in the US, the UK and parts of Europe, Asia and South America.

DownDetector, a site that monitors online outages, shows disruptions with the website, search and Google Drive.

Edit: Youtube is working fine for me at the moment. It's about 3 hours after the reported outages. Maybe it's fixed?

My internet server went down for about 4 hours last week. I got a text from them at about 3am saying "temporary loss of service due maintenance. Service will resume at approximately 9am". It resumed at 7, and I had to restart it a few times before everything worked as usual.
