Should the US get off the pot and go metric?

I can do either, except in medical measures.

Years ago American cars had US/SAE bolts, British cars had Whitworth and the rest were Metric. Depending on where he worked a mechanic might need 3 sets of wrenches.

When I stayed in a hotel in London the scale had a double dial, Kilos and stones. I knew that a kilo was 2.2 pounds so I figured it out.

Interstate 19 has metric road signs, the only place I have seen them in the US.

"Bilingual" speedometers are a convenience if you drive into Canada or Mexico.

When liquor was switched to metric it didn't seem to be a problem, people still got drunk.

But isn't it time we ditch the 16th Century measures, so we can understand what the rest of the world is using?
Why not have a world currency, and government so people don’t get confused?

we don't need a world currency or government and nobody is calling for that.

Obviously all the countries in the world that use metric don't have the same currency or the same government.

My guess is that the USA would rather double down and spend more time and energy fighting it than it would take to fall into line with the rest of the world.

It is a simple discussion. But the wrong one.
The United States has acquiesced to too many "international" concerns.
The entire world was happy to let us use our inches, feet, yards, and miles when we pulled their feet out of the Nazi fires.
:giggle:🤩

There are only 3 nations, who do not use the metric system- Liberia, Myanmar, and the U.S. For all intents, the US is on the metric system. US car manufacturers use the metric system to build their cars. Most manufactures are also metric. Going all metric, would eliminate the confusion of using two different measurement systems.

My goodness, you had to go back 80 years, to dig up that old chestnut ? Should I remind you that the only country to ever actually USE an atomic bomb, was the USA, twice. In 2024, the USA's military forces ALL use the Metric system of measurement, did you know that fact ?

Sure, but WHY would it be so good to do so?

The US military uses the Metric system of measurement to be in step with the rest of the world's military forces. Military maps and charts use meters and kilometers, and kilos are used for weight measurements. Liquids are measured in liters not gallons. Weapon calibers are in millimeters . Speeds are measured in kilometers per hour. If Billy Bob from rural Montana can master this system as a private going through basic, maybe you can too.

That's good reason. Anathema to me but reason enough. ;)

We don't have to "fight it", know one can make us do it except our own government. If that was going to happen it would already be done! Until the majority if the American people want it, it will not happen...

No doubt that not having it now is costing us something...but for the USA to convert 100% metric would have a very large price tag, not to mention the work for everyone to learn the system. Costs like converting all gasoline pumps, all cash registers, all computers, etc. etc. billions if not trillions of conversion costs....

So what you are really saying is that the USA is 54 YEARS behind Canada in terms of adopting the Metric system? Canada switched to the Metric system in 1970. In 54 YEARS the USA could have made all the changes you pointed out in your post. As for learning the system, that takes place in Grade 4 in Canada. Are you saying that American kids can't learn Metric, if it is taught as a part of the curriculum, nation wide ?
