Severe pain in hands

Thank you for posting that helpful video, @Radrook ! I have recently started feeling a sharp pain in my lower thumb when turned a certain way. I have tended to baby that hand due to that sharp pain. I watched your video and tried all the exercises and already feel some relief. TY!!
I will continue and hopefully will be completely pain free in the near future. I thought I would have this all my life. I'm forever grateful.

Welcomed! Good to know that you are feeling better.

Have you been eating anything out of the ordinary lately? Anyone bring you food or drink you don't usually have?
It doesn't sound chronic but more reactive.
Anything different lately? Even breathed.
No. And it does seem chronic....my hands have been *bothering* me for several years. It's only gotten borderline intolerable over the past several weeks.

They were x-rayed back in 2017 or 18, and I was told there was "a little arthritis" in there, but nothing serious. And no treatment was recommended.

Try juicing fresh ginger and putting some juice in some latex gloves that you wear over night. have a similar lesser condition in my hands and this seems to help when it gets bad. It might help cut down on your ibuprofen use. Also, mix a tablespoon or two of the ginger juice in 12-16 oz of water, as I posted in a previous post.
I drink ginger tea on the daily, but I'll try the juice thing. I keep ginger root on hand.

(ha!...that wasn't a pun. I actually keep ginger root around)

Sorry to hear this man. I'm no doctor, and don't have any solution. :(

I've been lucky in this regard. My hands are mostly okay. The only difference I've noticed is that when it's cold, my hands cramp into claws. So weird. But warm them up a bit, and I'm good. Nothing on the scale of what you're suffering from.

It's driving me crazy. And it's making me angry. I sure hope something can be done about it. Like I said, I'll be seeing my dr soon. In a couple days, I thought, but it's actually next month. But that's soon enough, tho.

I have some of the same issues with OA. My thumbs in particular are twisted and can be very painful when my OA is flaring up. Weirdly I can stop the discomfort rather quickly using glucosamine with MSM. It MUST have the MSM…because I have no doubt that is what gives me the rapid relief. Usually takes a couple days…
Sulphur --try onions, garlic, broccoli

My hands are killing me, man! The pain is intense, and it's mostly in my fingers, mainly the middle joints of the middle fingers, and my right hand is worse by far than my left. I'm right-handed.

Norco and Ibuprophen are my regular Rx's. My Norco is 10mg hydrocodone plus 325mg acetaminophen, and I take 5 tabs per day. The Ib is 600mg and I take 3 to 5/day.

They don't help. The pain is the same whether I take my meds or not.

I've used heat...or, warmth, rather. That gives me temporary relief....like for 20-30 minutes, and it's minor relief.

My hands are also jerky (mainly the right one). They don't tremble, they jerk suddenly once in a while. Usually while I'm typing or using hand tools, and every now and then, a couple of fingers will go stiff-straight and lock up like that. That hurts a lot, too, and it lasts several minutes. Also, I drop things a lot, all day every day. My hands lose their grip, or don't actually get a grip in the first place.

Anyone else? Have any suggestions?

I'm really sick of it. It's tickin me off.
not just any doctor....a hand specialist....for instance sports medicine ucla or whatever huge medical conglomerates that are close to you that service basketball players etc stop screwing around with it.......well known specialists only---no guessers most of em are guessers

I have Scoliosis which radiates mostly left leg and often severe pain. However, I get a great relief taking both Gabapentine(#1 Neuro. med) along with Tramadol(Narco).
In my suggestion, you may get a relief taking both Arthritis med along with Hydrocodine.
In my case, just Tramadol does not work on my severe pain. even though Tramadol is one of potent pain meds.
I need to take both.
I suggest to ask your Dr. on this combo.

I'm sorry you are having such bad pain.....I've had good results with ice packs, continuous use for one or two days. I agree with others too that diet and lots of water helps.

@Amanda76

I've tried various pain medications over the years, after getting severe back injuries when I was 36 (and 3 major surgeries since). Re-uptake medications like Gabapentin don't work for me, and they cause bad side effects. It's like those type of meds don't play nice with my brain, and most of them actually exacerbate my RLS.

The Norco and Ibuprophen are the only Rx meds that work *pretty well* without causing drowsiness, poor coordination, fogginess, cramps, etc. And they're the only Rx medications I take because I'm otherwise reasonably healthy; blood work always looks great, BMI is good, no diabetes, normal heart, normal prostate, not overweight. The only serious health issues I've ever had relate to a big, bad fall I took when I was 36, which damaged my spine and liver.

In my knowleage along with my personal experience, Gabapentin is #1 Neurological med. When I started 100 mg. about 20 years ago, my Dr.(now retired), asked me whether I had any adverse effect, I told him there is none. Currently I've on Gabapentin 400 with Tramadol which I really rely on to get a good relief. In that regard, I'm lucky one, but in your case, 'bad side effect' is untrouble. Only my suggestion would be 'large heating pad' which I, often use for my back pain before getting up from the bed.
Also, someone told me 'medical marijuana' with some form of pain-med. has a good relief for severe pain.

If THC is legal in your state - go to a facility and tell the owner or someone with knowledge there about your hand pain. THC/CBD combo 1 to 1 should take care of the pain for hours at a time with very limited side effects.

My sister was on 300mg Gabapentin X3/day and no side effects. When I take only a 100mg cap, I feel ripped all day, like I just threw back 4 or 5 shots of whiskey.

I've considered talking to my PCP about medical MJ. I'll wait til I build up too much tolerance to the Norco. Which is inevitable.

Anyway, my hands are a separate issue from my back problems. Well, unless there's an issue in my cervical or thoracic spine. But I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the problem is limited to my hands, specifically; probably the bones, maybe the nerves.

I'm in Calif. I have to get a Rx from my doctor for medical MJ. It's something I'm considering. I've used CBD oil before and it was useless, but it's highly likely it contained an insignificant amount of THC. It was some off-brand that a friend gave me.

My OA is quite advanced, and I have got to the situation now where it's very painful for me if not impossible to grip anything slim like a pen..my fingers just won't close so I have to find ways around and so now I buy those really fat pens, and they are much easier to hold.
I take a supplement D3. 4000 units per day.

What I'm concerned about with THC is that it'll make me drowsy, and I already suffer chronic fatigue caused by back pain and spinal nerve damage. I've smoked MJ only a few times my whole life and found out I'm a total lightwieght. It wasn't even pleasant, just put me to sleep or made me comatose for endless hours.

So, that's something I'd need to talk to the doc about. Or my pain management guy. He might know more about it.

I can't imagine why you would need a prescription anymore, unless by doing so you get it paid for by your health care provider.

CBD oil? I've heard people say it works for them, but none of the very pricey, supposedly high quality CBD oil I bought never did..."anything" at all.

I'm not sure if Indica type THC actually reduces pain, but it does help block your perception of it, being stoned and all.

I had a bone scan done 2 weeks ago and found that I have severe Osteoarthritis in both hips requiring pain intervention.

The doctor has me on Boniva. Works well so far. One pill, once per month. I also had to redo my diet to get more protein and Vitamin D and Calcium into my body. I take the supplement Vitamin D3 and have been for over a year now. I drink about 2 quarts of milk per day.
Despite serious spinal injuries, old ones that have healed and then rehealed after surgeries, there isn't as much arthritis in my spine as doctors expected. Arthritis in my lumbar spine was surgically removed in 2017...surgeon did that while he was in there making repairs, like a bonus.

I'm a believer in vitamin and mineral supplements. B12 and B6, and Fish Oil w/D3 are my main ones, and I def feel a difference when I'm out of them. My energy level plummets and I focus more on my pain and get all grumpy.

Yes, I'd want my insurance billed. It's covered 100%.

This is good info, Nate. Thanks!
