Just For No Reason, Except Being Bored

On Tuesday, I decided that I should take advantage of my free travel on United, so I made a reservation for Friday to fly out to Chicago and home before evening. Yesterday morning, I flew nonstop from Harrisburg to Chicago. I left at 7 in the morning and got into Chicago ahead of schedule at 7:45 Central Time. I caught a cab and went downtown to Michigan Avenue and had breakfast at Yolk-South Loop. Great breakfast and I was hungry. I only had one cup of coffee until the flight then and one more on the plane.

At 2:30, I decided to grab a light lunch. My favorite place for lunch was Carlos’s, but they had closed due to not being able to get enough help. So instead, I ate at The Purple Pig and had the Halibut. A really cool place. Very clean and the food was also very good.

My return flight departed O’Hare at 6:15 and we were due to arrive back in Harrisburg at 9:15. We arrived at 9:05. I grabbed the shuttle to go pick up my car and was home just before 10:30. What a great way to spend a day. I told my wife she didn’t know what she missed. Of course I gained 3 pounds.

Do you find yourself professionally critiquing the pilot's skills in your head when you fly?
Not really. I am aware of their takeoff and landing skills and if there are no issues, I am satisfied. Every now and then, the Captain will invite me into the cockpit, which is against company policy, so I decline the invitation, but thank him or her. I try to keep these men and ladies out of trouble with the company. However, I may have broken the rule once or twice for a short distance.

How come it took 45 minutes to get there and 3 hours to get back ?

Next time if you choose Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to have that lunch, I'll bet she'll go with you. :giggle:
She has been there a few times. Her favorite store, Fred Hayman, I believe has closed.

If I go to the west coast, I go for longer than one day. If you go, I would suggest treating yourself to a real nice hotel stay at the Beverly Hilton, but it’s about $700 per night. If that doesn’t work, try the the Santa Monica Hotel.

Time zones change. I live in the eastern zone, which is one hour earlier than Chicago, which is in the Central Time Zone.
Flying from my zone to Central zone, I pick up an hour and when I return, I lose an hour. Comprender?

I left Harrisburg at 7 am, which is 6 am in Chicago.
We weren’t due to arrive until 8:05, but instead landed at 7:45 Chicago time
That’s a 1 hour 45 minute flight.

Returning, we departed Chicago at 6:15 Chicago time, which was 7:15 Harrisburg time
We were due to arrive in Harrisburg at 9:15, which is 8:15 Chicago time, but arrived at 9:05, which is 8:05 Chicago time
That’s a 1 hour 50 minute flight.

Capisce?

I also have a friend that was a pilot for Delta. He does the same thing now and then. He goes to Atlanta for his one-day getaway. He lives in Greenwich Village in New York, but has to go into the city pretty often. He’s moving in a few weeks. He said he’s tired if having to go into the sewer with all the rats that live in there. I think he means New York City. He sold his house for one and three-quarter million.

The title of this thread reads: "Just For No Reason, Except Being Bored."
My wife once said: "I'm bored." Not long after she had the surprise of her life.

The famous Orient Express has day trips to top up the coffers. Tickets for such trips are like gold, these day trips are sold out months in advance. It must have been my lucky day, or just a case of right day right time. I had phoned just to ask how far ahead were they with the day trip ticket sales? the lady replied that she had just put the phone down on a cancellation, would I be interested?
Would I be interested? Is the Pope a catholic?

On arrival we were greeted by on old time jazz band.

The carriage for our journey, like all the carriages, was named. Meet Vera.

Our traction for the journey was definitely old technology. How popular it was.

Michael, our waiter, was described as our concierge.

Enjoy the images whilst I put five more together.

Did we dress up for our day out on The Orient Express?

We met others who really got into the swing of things. Don't they just look amazing?

Inside the carriage the restoration work is fantastic. A real treat on the eye.

One more photo of the engine hauling us on the day.

It was a stroke of luck to get those tickets and we enjoyed our day immensely. I do remember asking the lady if she was still bored.
She just smiled and tactfully said: "I don't think that I had better ask how much this all cost." Quite so dear.

Sounds tiring but glad you had a good time. The only thing I like about flying is the take offs and landings. Can't stand anything about travel by car.
Fly United. I think most of our planes have very good entertainment systems with lots of music and movies.

I remembered flying in the Boeing 787-Dreamliner and was invited into the cockpit. I didn’t turn down the invite. That was in 2016 when we were going to Hawaii and the plane was going on to Japan. The cockpit was beautiful with large screens and using FBW (fly by wire) technology.

The Japanese little league team lost the Little League world series recently.

Is it likely that these kids are working through Jet Lag? It must be brutal.
Jet lag depends on a person’s circadian clock, but people flying west to east are more vulnerable. However, it really depends on the person. Also, jet lag usually only lasts a few days, but others have told me it lasted longer for them, so again, it all depends on the person.

I think that was a very cool thing to do Oldman and I'm glad you had a nice day. I met and hung out with my godmother's younger friends from Pennsylvania a couple of decades ago. They were best friends and single (though one had a boyfriend). The two of them used to take flights to the Bahamas, have lunch, then fly home. I thought that was very cool too.

You are such a wonderful husband! Too bad we can't clone you. 🤗

Ssh! Don't say that, she might want money! Seriously, the lady is a wonderful wife, we do bitch now and then but it never lasts and, come bedtime, we always make a point of going to bed, friends. We met young, married young and have always been there for one another.
We have clocked up fifty-six years of marriage, so, only just out of the starting blocks really! We plan to give Joyce & Ronald Bond a run for the money.
