I Find the Ignore Button a Wonderful Feature of this Whole Forum

Great responses, with valid reasons for choosing or not choosing to use the Ignore function; thanks.

Most of the members here on SF are great. There are some who I disagree with on certain matters but who are always respectful about it; they never call anyone names, they never make derogatory remarks about anyone's intelligence or character, etc.; and they're wonderful.

However. The reason I've put some members on Ignore is this:

(For the sake of this argument, let's say that I worked as a door-to-door salesperson.) There are members who more than a time or two have said (even if not directly to me) things like, "All door-to-door salespeople are lazy, dishonest idiots who couldn't get a real job!" How could I as a door-to-door salesperson not find that offensive? Heck, even if they say "most" rather than "all", by the law of averages, I'd probably fall into who they're referring to.

So since freedom of speech does not mean that I have to read stuff that I find offensive and since the members I put on Ignore popped up in a lot of threads saying this kind of thing, it made it not only more convenient but less stressful for me to use the Ignore function. (And I've got enough stress in my life already.)

Well, I stirred the pot of the person who was nasty to me and I got in big trouble.
You called out dilettante for being a bit rude. It wasn't that big of a deal. Relax...you are a welcomed member of this forum. :)

I use the ignore button sparingly. These are individuals who (1) are chronic pot stirrers, (2) are a bit too vulgar for my tastes, or (3) have demonstrated during my six years here that they virtually never contribute anything useful to a conversation. I currently have a total of seven people on "ignore".

Why should I waste time scrolling through those people's posts?

Not sure what big trouble you got into - but usually on forums admin will follow up both parties doing personal attacks - so stirring the pot - aka behaving the same way back - is just as bad.

That's what I said before about reporting posts - no good reporting someone else's posts if you behaved the same way.

I have one person on IGNORE. They were put there because their responses were overly aggressive and never interesting.

If you need to use IGNORE in order to enjoy your visits to the site, then you should go ahead and use it. It doesn't have to be some big reason either - whatever makes your time on the board more enjoyable is fair game. It could be politics, religion, or just plain attitude, if someone is consistently spoiling your fun, get rid.

That said, I would personally send a PM to someone who was an issue in order to clear the air, or clarify a point. I don't jump to Ignore. Sometimes people respond and either they, or myself, was simply having a bad day, and in one case - the abuse was continuing, so.........

We'd all do well to remember that the real people behind these accounts are likely very different away from the computer. It's just the way things are. Computers are abstract, and we build up persona's. So I don't take things here entirely seriously. I can dislike a post by someone in one thread, and wholly agree with them in another - I don't carry over one bad experience. Life is too short......

ps: There's at least one or maybe even two people I should have on IGNORE, but I've not done it. :D

both parties doing personal attacks
Go back and read the first abusive thread. Seriously.

There are at least 2 parties spewing vile personal attacks, and none of them is me. That was before two more character assassination threads were started.

All of that behavior pushed far beyond what the Terms here permit, and none of that poor behavior was warranted or even provoked.
