Why the need to put large political signs in one's yard?

To tell people how wonderful you are, since they probably would not know it by your actions. Or lack of actions. .
 

It could be considered a kind of tribalism or a bonding ritual. It can also be manifested in the forms of bumper stickers or flags in the back of pickup trucks, almost bordering on intimidation of those of the opposing political viewpoint.

I hold my own political beliefs close to my chest, not wishing to have bricks thrown through my windows after dark in an era of extreme partisanship and a “facts be dam*ed” mentality. I thankfully don’t find the large political signs to be as prevalent in the current cycle as they were in 2020. People are simply getting exhausted by all of the drama, posturing, and outrageousness… 😾
 

Around here, the majority of people vote for the same party in every election so signage isn't usually a problem.
The "problem" comes with college football flags and banners :ROFLMAO:
Some can't stand the Alabama Crimson Tide and others detest the Auburn Tigers.
You have to be for one or the other of those in-state rivals LoL.

Tribalism might be it. Harry down the street has the same sign, you get to knock on Harry's door, and invite him over to your backyard BBQ. As Dr Seuss said, stars upon thars.
 
We here in Sydney are having local government elections in September. On many people's fences there are large pictures of candidates I have
never heard of. I always vote for the same political party who have served well in my area.

I don't really know why we even go vote because all we do is cancel each other out, but vote we do!

Exactly the same situation I'm in.
 
The political signs don't bother me so much as the flags... some houses have several, some huge, some rude, and so often those pricey flags are flying on houses that look like they would collapse from disrepair any day. I guess they'd rather spend their money on flags. I think they're used to show membership in their particular "club".
 
In our 55+ community we have a lot of clubs, two of them being political. One represents the Democrats, the other the Republicans. Each one meets once a month and they often invite leaders of the community to come and speak. You do not have to belong to the club to go and listen to the speaker. It is often very interesting to listen to each of them because those leaders are city commisioners, police chief, politicians that are open to a question and answer session after the meeting. It is good to follow the politics and future of the city.

All of that was nice, beautiful and peaceful until the last election. Then it became crazy. Around election time yard signs started to pop up everywhere in the community. Nice neighbors started to become less than nice. Some avoided each other. The whole climate became insufferable. The Board of Directors decided that we no longer can display political signs on our property. I agreed with that. I never displayed signs. I have strong political ideas but I do not need to display a sign to show my conviction. If a politician is good enough, his speeches and actions should be enough to get him/her elected.
 
I was told that a person must donate to pay for the signs and the money goes to the election campaign, or at least, that’s where it is supposed to go.

I have never known a sign to sway someone’s choice, or not mine anyway. My friend, the doctor who lives up the street from me gives a tidy sum to his choice. He gets a banner and hangs it in front of his house. I have another friend that has a sign from both nominees staked in his front yard.

I was hoping RFK, Jr would stay in the race. If you listen to him, he isn’t 100% on everything, but he has a lot of new, fresh ideas.
 
I've always have had small ones on my mail box and front door. Currently on my front door, I have one that I have I got in the mail. A certain woman in a certain country, who is running for President in that country.(y)
