Watching other people eat is entertainment?

On the internet and many TV programmes, we can watch others eating - as reviewers and such. Some people just watch people eating for no reason.

I bet people in parts of the world, where even getting enough basic food for whatever reason, would be amazed. Is it not all a bit crazy or am I alone in thinking this?

I used to watch a programme called Man V Food and it was extraordinary as to why anyone would do that to themselves.

what do you mean by watching people eating - you mean people doing reviews of restraurants and such?

I guess no different to reviews of, say, cruises - which many people around the world cannot afford to go on.

On YouTube and TikTok , people can just watch people eat. They get millions of followers.

I think it is called Mukbang.

Yes, it's a Mukbang and it's quite popular now. (Most people doing it on YT and TT pronounce it incorrectly, by the way 🤷‍♀️ ) Can't say I understand it, Rose. There are a few YouTubers who are massively overweight (more than 300 lb... sometimes a lot more) who have made this their career... shoving enough fast food for 8 people into their mouths while their audience literally sits there watching another human giving themselves a heart attack. Nope, don't get it, but I find it very sad.

Soon we'll get livestreams from the sleeping rooms of ordinary people via YouTube, if these doesn't exist already.
They'll probably call it ASMR and market it as "watch me sleep and you'll get relaxed". Gotta admit it's a clever way to make a living doing nothing at all. 🤭 There are actually ASMR mukbangs... because hearing people chew their food is sooooo relaxing, isn't it?

It IS foolish isn't it? I really do wonder sometimes at the mindlessness of the people who do these things and those who watch.

I certainly don't, I've always got plenty of things to do. I just heard of this and couldn't quite believe it.

Watching other people eat is often more "disgusting" than "entertainment". There is a nice Asian buffet in a nearby town which has excellent food at a reasonable price, and we stop there a few times a year when we are doing some shopping, It seems that every time we are there, there is someone who is filling their plates at least 3 or 4 times while we have one. They all have one common "trait"...that being Obesity....and they probably wonder why. Watching them shoveling food into their mouths is almost "entertaining".

I particularly can't bear to see anyone eating spaghetti - ugh, when they suck it in. Horrible.
To me eating is an occasion, a time to relax, chat and enjoy slowly good food, not a trough.
Even if I eat alone, I eat slowly and read or watch news or a relaxing program. I hate seeing food shovelled in.
I would definitely get indigestion if I ate too much or too fast. I'm sure it's an age thing because when I was young I could eat a lot more and faster.

Oh those all you can eat buffets. I can't stand them. The odd time I've ever ended up at one, if friends wanted to go, I only had a moderate plate, possibly a small top up. It was years ago and I avoid them now. I also dislike carveries, all that queuing and seeing hugely piled up plates. It's uncivilised!

There are different kinds of mukbangs. I agree it's silly if it's just watching someone eat... weird as all get-out. But there are also mukbangs where viewers actually "sit at the dinner table" with a person or a family and listen to stories, interesting facts, etc. and those are nice... when you watch for a while, you get to know the people and look forward to when they sit down and have a meal with viewers.

I'm repulsed if I watch people eat... In a restaurant I like to sit with my company on the same side of the table as me so I don't watch them eat...

I certainly wouldn't watch it on youtube.

What I really hate about some Youtubers is that regardless of what their subject is.. they'll pick up a drink..usually coffee or tea, and loudly slurp it several times during the video.. I always block Youtubers who do that , it makes me want to heave..

I've watched someone eating on youtube before. It wasn't technically a mukbang but sort of. It was a girl from Korea who ordered a bunch of food that was delivered. She would educate the audience on what the food was and how it was eaten.

I watched it before covid. In Korea where she was, you could get almost any kind of food delivered. I was envious. Maybe it's different now, and people in the US can get all that stuff.

But at that time, it was so interesting to see what people could get delivered. From boiled soybeans to different kinds of soups and curries to breakfast food. It was interesting to see how it was packed and how well it traveled via delivery.
