Microsoft Edge installed without permission.

I was just informed by Microsoft that my browser has been changed to Microsoft Edge. Can they do that without my permission? Who do I sue?
 

Do you mean that your default choice was changed to Edge instead of another browser that you usually use ? If that's the case you can go into settings and change the default back to the browser you prefer. I have had the same thing happen to me when there is an update to Edge and a pop up shows up asking if I want to make it my default browser and without paying attention I click the yes option. Microsoft can be tricky that way.

The Microsoft Edge browser is always there if you have Windows OS. But you can make your default browser to be another browser.

Go into the Edge settings and set the default browser back to your preferred browser.

You can sue Microsoft, I guess. Good luck with that.

Yes. I've been using Chrome. And it wasn't in the middle of an update. Thank you. I'll try switching back. I was shocked to get the large window screen telling me that I now will be using Microsoft Edge. Next they'll start selling me stuff trying to convince me that it's for my own good. Wouldn't surprise me if they change their name to Big Brother. Big Sister doesn't like that. :mad:
 
MS is annoyingly intrusive in their quest to have you use their products. Edge is one, the other that's a constant nuisance is One Drive. Even though I've deleted it, it just won't go away completely and insists on being the default "save to" destination.
If you're on Windows 11 here's how to set your default browser in the system:
Start Button
Settings
Apps
Default Apps
Scroll down to Chrome and click on the arrow on the right
Set Chrome as your default browser.
 
As others above have said, just change the default. Edge is part of Windows, non-uninstallable. You need a always-available browser if only for on day one of a new computer to download your preferred browser. Think of it like a backup browser.
 
Chrome has some security issues as well. Probably due to its popularity, which makes it a prime hacking target. Just something to be aware of.
 
That happened to me one time. But they design things like "Download This Now" in ways that can get you to download when you thought you were deleting the email. In my case there was an option in the download to "Reinstall Windows 8.1" which was not deleted from my hard drive. I think I had 30 days to reinstall, or something like that.
 
Microsoft is a pain in the @$$, I have nothing to do with them at all, but what's amusing- they send me "change of terms of service" emails periodically. LOL, I've never had an account with M$ or used/paid for services.

Thank you all for the info and suggestions, but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about now. I think I might want to toss my computer and start all over again. "Fixing" is not my forte.:rolleyes:
 
Chrome tries the same trick on my 11 pro. Google too.

BRAVE is kind of a neat browser. you don't need a membership. You sort of just lurk out there. Not as many adds.

If you want to have a dual boot of Windows and linux, you must install Windows first. If you install linux first. windows will overwrite it. I'm not sure about updating windows versions. I use Chromium as opposed to Chrome, as chrome kept losing my passwords.
 
Actually, if you just start Chrome, it should tell you that it's not the default browser, and ask if you want to make it so.

Edge is pernicious. I use Firefox myself. I'm not suggesting you do this, just making an observation. If you start Edge, and then close it, it never really goes away. If you look at the processes running, you'll see it's just sitting there in memory. The solution is to never start Edge.

Windows was installed first. But nevertheless Windows removed my linux system from my PC.
 
This happened to me once, too: Windows just set Edge as my default browser. Very annoying. I simply switched back to Chrome, which I haven't really had any issues with. I hate when companies do that, though (i.e., just make the switch on their own, without consulting you).
