Not quite as big... I tried this on in a hat shop on River St. in Savannah... my attempt at recreating the "Ascot" number from My Fair Lady. That's my sister behind me, laughing at me =P

I wore a much smaller version of that hat to a beach in the Caribbean once, when I was with my three teenagers. I was self-conscious and asked my daughters if it looked stupid on me. My older daughter said, "Well. . . it doesn't look TOO stupid."

We still laugh about that. I guess the moral is, don't ask if you don't want an honest answer!

(I ended up buying a different hat.)

I wear a coolie hat for that reason....it lets some sunlight through.

I know "coolie" is a pejorative term, but the people I met in Taiwan all called it that. They probably picked it up from English-speaking people 2 or 3 hundred years ago. Someone told me the word that Chinese people call it is the same word for cone-shaped or conical, but I don't remember it, and don't remember if it was Cantonese or Mandarin.

Anyway, they're excellent gardening hats.

I wear caps or visors outside when neccesary and occasionally a beanie in winter

I enjoy wearing hats, but this one would draw unwanted attention. Might be acceptable on a very sunny beach. With this hat you wouldn't need a beach umbrella.
