How far in age can you go back to.

I can remember far back to the age of 3. I remember playing in the back yard with my sister in India. My father had already left 3 months before, flying out to Australia by plane, this was in 1946.
Australia was wanting tradesmen after the War and when he said he was a British subject and a Boilermaker he got the job straight away. Our ship had gone into drydock for repairs and we had to live with his brother for 3 months before we could set sail. This was in 1947, every time we saw a plane fly over the house we would call out "Hello, there's Daddy's plane"." We're coming soon". He also sent us a toy Koala each. We loved them.

I’m not sure how much I remember and how much is the memories that others have shared with me over the years.

I would say from 4 years old.

It’s also interesting that some particularly chaotic periods of my childhood seem to be missing from my memory while others are quite clear.

I was born in California and lived there almost a year ... don't consciously remember any of that.
I was 1yrs old when my brother was born and don't remember him coming home.
I was 3yrs old when my sister was born and visiting her and my mom in the hospital ... I remember.
A couple of things before my sister was born ... I remember.
So I'd say my conscious memory is between 2 and 3 but not extremely detailed.

My earliest memory is from the age of 4, when I can remember sitting on a hard wooden chair on a very rainy day watching a black-and-white cartoon on TV about a tiger as I ate a baloney sandwich. I think that the memory stimulated all of my senses, which served to anchor it in recollection… 🐅

What a sweet little girl you were, Hearlady!

I remember being in my crib with a blow-up plastic penguin, made out of that stuff beach balls are made of. I loved the penguin and the plasticy smell of it. It makes me think of those monkeys who loved their wire mothers.

I remember my second birthday when I got a teddy bear almost as big as I was. I still have him. Most of the fur is worn off which makes more sense than a plastic penguin.

I remember my third birthday when I was picking out my Irish Setter. My father telling me I got to choose and me choosing the father dog instead of one of the puppies (bigger, more fur.) I had him for 18 years and almost wore the fur off him, much better than a teddy bear or penguin.

I do remember a few things that happened when I was 4. At 5, I remember a lot. At 4, we were at Grandma’s and The adults were all in the kitchen drinking coffee and eating Grandma’s warm sweet rolls and I was in the dining room where she had a big buffet with drawers in it. I opened one of the drawers and found just an electrical plug with no wire and I wondered what would happen if I plugged it in.

When I plugged it in, all I remember was a big flash of light and being blown across the room. Mom told me the rest of the story because I was unconscious. She said that when the adults heard what sounded like a loud crack, the adults all ran into the dining room and found me lying on the floor unconscious and the plug in socket still throwing sparks.

At first, they thought I had been electrocuted because my hand was totally black and I was out cold. My mom said she screamed and dad grabbed me and started smacking me in the face while Grandma got a cold compress and Grandpa called the doctor, which showed up 15 minutes later. He lived just up the street in our small town.

Dad told Doc that he felt a heartbeat, so Doc gave me smelling salts and I finally woke up. Mom was crying and Grandma said she had to walk away because she thought I had died. BTW, I was born on my Grandma’s birthday. I loved that woman so much that as I got older and Grandpa died, I would mow her grass and do any chores she wanted done. She always wanted to pay me and I would tell her that I will get paid in Heaven. She always enjoyed me visiting her, even after I was married and we had our first baby. She died at the age of 94.

I think people who have had some kind of trauma earlier, remember things earlier

I've spoken of this before here..but my first memory was at 14 months because of a traumatic event... and I had 2 very clear memories from that age. Then again a very clear memory at 2 years old because of yet another traumatic event..

I have no memories from those ages of anything normal or happy.. just those trauma memories.. and then the first memory of anything other than trauma was about about 6 year old..

I have this memory of being placed in a doctor's pediatric scale, the startling instability of the cradle as it settled down, and the coldness on my skin. I've often wondered, "Can I really remember back that far, or is it a memory of a dream?"

it's probably imagination because no baby is set on a unlined Weighing scale..so you wouldn't have felt the cold of the scale..

3 years old. My grandparents bought me a stuffed monkey for Christmas. I had seen it in the store earlier on and told my grandmother how much I loved it. At the time she did not say anything to me. Then at Christmas, there it was! My favorite toy that became my companion for years! I named it Chico.
