Is perfect health even remotely possible?

I was looking at life expectancy in the UK. Then I got to thinking about the matter of perfect health. Is it remotely possible or are that and long life just mirages chased by mankind?
Great old age surely brings with it great misery in these bodies, so to me is not desirable.

Do you know anyone over 60 who has not got a degenerative condition? If course there are exceptions, I have known those who seem indestructible. Yet few I think.

My opinion is: Some people are growing old in good health, but suddenly they decline very rapidly and can't come to terms with it. Other people die slowly, gradually, step by step, but are content with it. I won't tell you to which people I belong.

Is perfect health even remotely possible?

Maybe "pretty good" but not perfect, I'm sure. In some areas of the world where the populace are not heavily influenced by modern lifestyle, people are living better, and longer. Some locations:
Ikaria, Greece
Okinawa, Japan
Nicoya, Costa Rica
Sardinia, Italy
Loma Linda, United States.

These areas are documented in a study called Blue Zones.

Netflix has a series called Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones

Seems that you mean the attainment of reasonably good health within the parameters of growing old, becoming feeble and dying and most have responded to your question assuming those parameters. However, not all of us here hold that view. You see, for many of us who hold a theistic perspective, genuine perfect health necessitates no aging, no sickness nor death. So to us you are asking whether mankind can attain that ideal condition via its medical or other technological advancements. To which we would have to answer no, based on theological reasons.

I hold the view that nothing living is in perfect health. "Perfect health", taken literally is impossible because we already know there is no such thing. Nothing can be perfect because it is always struggling to survive, and that involves innate conflict with our bodies operation. I don't need to believe in a higher power to understand this. I don't understand why you insist that the answer is "No, because of theological reasons.?

I think my father came close to having perfect health. He didn't even wear glasses for reading until he was about 70. He was never ill apart from one bout of flu in the 60's... but he had no ailments or conditions until he got to his 80's then he got Parkinsons...

I think @Aunt Bea has it nailed. It's all about quality of life rather than length or some subjective term called "perfect health".

In the end, which only really God knows, we're all gonna die. Nothing I can do about that, but I can live my life for enrichment and service to others, where I can.

I never claimed that one needed to be a theist in order to believe that perfect health is impossible. Why do I hold that view? Well, very simple, because I am a theist who believes that our dying condition, and the impossibility of perfect health, can be traced to our relationship with our creator. You know, similar to how you hold a totally opposite view and then choose to express it.

I believe it’s also a lucky roll of the genetic dice. And moderation when it comes to the vices.
I know I posted this earlier about Jack Lalanne, who lived to 96. His older brother lived almost two years longer and did none of the healthy things Jack was famous for. He stated his favorite meal was pork ribs! Jack had a very strict diet that avoided all processed foods and meat, in addition to all his exercises.

Yeah! I remember Jack Lalanne from all his exercise routines on black and white TV. Last I saw him was on the Internet promoting the sale of a juicer. True about genetics. Some people appear to be on a genetically-determined accelerated aging process, while others appear to be on on comparatively very slow one. I knew this fellow who claimed to be fifty-two, albeit looked a very beaten up 87. He was just four years older than me, and I definitely did not look that way at age 52. Neither did my parents. Also true about lifestyle choices.

I agree with most of all the statements above. There are several reasons for longevity, long term health outcomes, and so on.

But I think one of if not the most important one is that our life is pure poison! Most air quality results show that the air itself is sickening us. The water, whether chemicals added to it or not is toxic. Have you seen the inside of pipes during construction?
Then the food...oh my the food!

According to US statistics...74% of Americans are overweight or obese, Young adult cancers are going up 79% in the last 10 years, 25% of men now under 40 have erectile dysfunction, 50% of American adults have type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. In 1950 1% had type 2 diabetes. Now it's 50%. Just think of that statement right there. 1 percent to 50 percent! Astonishing!

Alzheimer's, dementia are going through the roof. We now have young adult dementias. They have increased three times since 2012. By young we mean 40 and even cases of earlier. One in two Americans are expected to have cancer in their lifetime now, one in two. One in 36 children has autism now, in the United States. That was one in 150 in the year 2000. And 1 in 1100 in 1980. Why the massive increase? In California Autism rates are one in 22. So if it regional and related to decades, what has changed? Think about that for one moment. One in 22 of children born in California will have or do have with a lifetime neuro-developmental disorder.

Infertility going up 1% per year Since 2000. Women's egg production is at all time lows, but the more disturbing stats is that the eggs being released by the ovaries is not structurally capable of creating and surviving the process of reproduction. They are soft, weak walled eggs. If they procure the sperm and fertilize, they are failing to sustain life in the early stages (weeks 1-3). Mens sperm counts are so low, I'm surprised we can get anyone pregnant!

According to the US DND, 77% of young Americans can't serve in the military because of obesity or drug abuse. This is the same with fire, police, paramedics, and many many other departments as well.

Autoimmune diseases. Some studies are saying they're going up 13% per year. Heart disease, which is totally preventable, is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing around 800,000 people per year.

Basically since the 50's-70's period, people started to eat more and do less. In the 90's ate even more and did even less. Now in 2024 (I have not seen the stats) people are eating way more calories and binge watching or sitting on their couch more than ever. I would imagine the numbers are frankly astonishing!

All of this points to our lifestyle and food are directly killing us. People choose to be sedentary or have limited exercise. No offense to anyone or their lifestyle but walking (what humans are biologically designed to do) is not really a form of exercise. My uncle and his almost obese wife were avid walkers. Like long long walks, probably 5k min daily, yet she died of cancer and never lost any weight in 10 years. The human bodies ability to adapt is what tricks many people into thinking they are exercising. Just because you can do something easily does not mean you are in shape! The body has simply adapted to do what you normally do so it can function on a set level with ease.

It is the basis for military spec training. Keep pushing the level you need to function at higher and higher, until you reach the level you want to be the norm, then maintaining it is easy.

Unfortunately one needs to stress yourself regularly past the point of comfort or the body simply adapts and will not make changes. You will find your point of comfort keeps moving and what you did last month is now easy. That is change. Walking the same 5 or even 10k walk all the time at the same speed is doing nothing. Before anyone says 'hold on a sec', and goes on the offense (lol) yes doing anything is absolutely better than doing nothing, and good on ya! But it does nothing for actual health repair!

Basically since what we eat, drink and breathe are slowly killing us, we as a people need to do more to ensure we live a long healthy life to the best of our abilities!

Wish you all the best!

@Tazx - I agree with your post especially regarding diseases.
Exercise is important too, and walking is one of the best, vital to help us keep our mobility.
With that being said, diseases are caused by contamination, drugs and pollution, not by the types of exercise.

Not sure what happened there John. Weird. My response was posted as you said it! John, I never said or insinuated any type of exercise caused anything. I was stating that you need to get out of your comfort zone to build better health. Not that walking caused anything or was detrimental. Just said you should do more than just that. But to each their own.

The post's tone is alarmist and may overstate some risks while overlooking positive health trends.

To accurately assess these claims, one would need to consult peer-reviewed scientific literature and reports from reputable health organizations. It's important to approach such sweeping claims with skepticism and seek out authoritative sources for health information.

Uh how is it alarmist? Facts alarm you? These alarming facts are everywhere on the net if you look. What risks are overstated?
So tired of people responding like this.

Nothing is alarming. Its on the NEWS! Does the news alarm you? They openly say this on tv and in magazines!
The science is there. No one making anything up. If you got a problem with this post, contact your local govt. Thats where the info comes from.

Sometimes the forums where individuals are considered wise and life experienced produce responses like this!

Could you give the references for the statistics you state please. :)
You know what, NO! Not going to do the work for you. If you think all these numbers are false then that's on you. I don't care what you think. Getting really tired of this whole forum. Other than a few nice people and some really open minded and intelligent people, several need to be spoon fed info! But still they don't believe it! Lol. If you can look around society and not SEE what I am talking about, then, hey, stay in your own lane! Lol.
