Walking the Curb without a Net

😍 I've made advances. Hadn't left the house since January 16.

June 11 I descended the three steps of my front stoop and climbed back up.

June 16 drove the car around the block to charge the battery. I've really shrunk. I could barely see through the steering wheel. Next time I'll sit on a big pillow.

July 14 struck off on two canes. Very dangerous. I'll do this only as an exercise with the two-wheel walker in front of me.

July 26 took a couple steps with one cane.

Any step we take when we don't want to is a victory. That one step leads to the next, brings another opportunity to be a part of our community, small little word it maybe but it leads to glorious chances to make new friends, be part of something that can bring us great joy.

I don't know where you live but I do there are/is things you can be a
part of in your community. My local library is part of that for me. They have a variety of programs, special programs they bring in, speakers, musicians and artists they bring in. They also have a very large lobby with comfortable chairs that are perfect for reading and meeting others, most of the time the books will settle into laps and conversation takes over.

I don't like football but enjoy going to watch the marching band, the drum drills and the dance drill teams. In the spring there is the band doing formal classical music, there is the choir doing beautiful performances. The kids in the theater are performing in stage worthy plays.

I have all those things withing a couple of miles from home and for the most part are free of charge. Research your community, your school district, you will be amazed at what is available to keep you involved and thrilled just outside your door!

Just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my left hip and lower back, no surprise there. Looking forward to next Dr appointment and hopefully a session with a physical therapist to get advice on exercise to strengthen muscles around affected joints.
Very careful shallow squats, do you think?

yes I hope you get some good advice. I spent fortunes at a private Physiotherapist for months when the pain started to get really bad in my knee...aside from him suggesting I wear a patella knee protector.. and sending me for X-rays at Harley street ( which also cost a fortune)... I might as well have saved my money. The only thing that relieved my pain were the steroid injections...on the NHS ( free)...

Drove to the clinic on Aug 8. Got antibiotics for a UTI, blood pressure was 175 over something. I had fun. I'm meditating and walking and taking hibiscus tea to try to lower BP. I'm out of magnesium.

Drove again on Aug 12 for a follow up. Blood pressure 172 over something, and 152 in the other arm. They said the high BP could be due to either the infection or the antibiotics. Antibiotics discontinued. Have an appointment for next Monday to check on the UTI and to check out my groin hernia.

** Staying busy is not the answer. Staying busy is the question. Yes! is the answer.**

 I really hope you're taking good care of yourself... don't make me come up there to the last frontier!! 🤗
Hopefully by your follow-up on Monday, all will be back to normal.

It's good to get out and about. I felt like people again when on August 25 I drove to the post office. I went on a Sunday so I could make a straight pass through. There are two heavy doors entering and another two leaving. They were very hard to manage, and I'm still paying for it. I think in future I'd better go on a week day when there are passersby to help with the doors.

On Sep 9 I gassed up, no problem.

On Sep 12 I drove to the market and, even though in a wheelchair, I strained both knees wrestling with glass doors and reaching for things.

It's okay, I'll be a lazybones for awhile, I know how to make that into an art form.

**Aw, c'mon, man, it was just a power nap.**

Good to see you out and about. You’ve had a long, hard haul.

Don’t they have buttons to push to open doors on Public buildings or big stores. I’ve started using them whenever they’re available. I used to think I was being wussy; don’t care now.

Not at our post office. Wow, are those doors heavy maneuvering with a walker --I nearly fell. Thanks for stopping by, Jules. Coffee's always on.

@gruntlabor, how bad are the winters where you are? Do you live in a milder area of AK?
I hope you have an easier time going forward. 🌹
I live in southcentral --Anchorage/Wasilla area, where much of the population is. Winters here are devastating. They were nothing when I was younger, but today it's negotiating the snow and ice that is difficult. Glaciers form on my porch roof and melt and refreeze at the base of my porch steps. So, the worst of any trip is getting from house to car and back. And my driveway is on a slant.

But I'll get past it by going through it. December has the shortest day so that's a breakthrough. Thank goodness for delivery services. I'll be okay, I can stay home. The main worries are pipes freezing and losing electricity. Thanks, Rose.

I guess you are one tough lady dealing with such awful winters. I hope you can get a generator for electric if the power goes out.

You know you'll have us to talk to when you can't get out.

I follow a couple of channels on YT that take place in Alaska. I love them! It is so beautiful there with all the snow and the forest covered. Many times beautiful things come with a price. I guess that is the cold, ice and hardships of winter. The couple I am following are a young couple who just had a baby. They bought land and started building an A-Frame. They had never been to Alaska, didn't know anything about living there and have never built a house or heated with wood before. They are doing it though. Got lots of help from neighbors.

I just looked at the weather report for Wasilla. The high will only be 52F and there is a 59% chance of rain afternoon/evening. But no freezing thank goodness. Your temps now are what I enjoy the most! I hope you can get out and enjoy the cool air.

Though I do like cool weather, I don't want to freeze. I feel like I keep better when it's cool.
