Walking the Curb without a Net

No snow yet, and mild temperatures, about 28 degrees this morning. I remember many cold Halloweens, one that was 29 below.
Happy Halloween.

**Memento Hunting**
Blood and bones and eyeballs
Zombies and witches and wolf calls,
Two ghosts and a cat
An owl and a bat
Will never fit into my catchalls.

Sometimes I wonder and marvel at your life up there in the cold. Guess you're used to it by now. Somehow, it seems cozy to me to be snowed in, but in reality I know not everyone can cope with it over time.

What are your secrets @gruntlabor ?

I was so happy to see you posted! Yes, tell us your secrets of Alaska life. Especially when it is dark all day and night. I hate night time so I don't think I would do very well then.
You would do fine, Katlupe, you are so resiliant! I turn on lots of lights and cuddle up with books, computer, and TV. Summertime is chaos. Winter is rest time. Rest and recovery.

So suddenly we have the fifth snowiest October on record, 22 inches in the last week. It's early on to be worrying about collapsing roofs. Temperatures are mild, of course.
The good news is that I have only two months to wait until the days begin lengthening again.

All quiet here on the front despite rumors that the Indians have been stirred up.
We (me and the mice) have been enjoying mild weather.
I haven't started the car since October 19, I really need to do that but my legs are weaker than usual so am putting it off.
Have been cooking everything from scratch, no ready-made foods for me, hopefully. I'm trying new recipes for homemade crackers. I think either croutons or charred sourdough crepes are my best bet though.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYBODY!

**Crusty Old Curmudgeon grumbling over his Thanksgiving dinner: .. prices through the roof! .. mumbling.. fish and game! .. growling.. taxes! .. shouting .. damn crazy drivers! ..

Sassy Grandkid: But Grandpa, you should be thankful on Thanksgiving Day! You're lucky you weren't born --

Crusty Old Curmudgeon shaking his fork: DON'T give me that lucky-to-be-born-here crap. We paid dearly. We ate bullets and sweated blood for this country, by God and we built --

Sassy Grandkid shaking his head and interrupting: No, Grandpa, I was gonna say, you're lucky you weren't born a dog.**

Earthquake swarm in western Aleutians
Unseasonably warm weather. Having a great day! Walking with less pain! Trying to get stuff done:
Shower
Clean the kitchen!
Cook Cook Cook
I'll try to start the car
See if I can make it up the stairs, change light bulbs, etc..
Strip and weigh myself!
Gettin' stuff done, movin' right along.. 😍

Frozen-over lakes are a source of great fun --and danger --during Alaska winters. There are often early birds who head out before the lake has built up a safe thickness of ice. I remember, a few years ago, after an earthquake, a couple went out for their daily skate over a frozen lake. But the earthquake had weakened the ice, and they fell through. Both drowned!

Unalaskans help document largest single-species wildlife die-off ever recorded

Our extra-warm winter is playing havoc with the bird population. The name 'Unalaska' is derived from the Russian. I think the first syllable narrows down the location, which is in the Aleutian Islands. Aleut speakers say “Ounalashka.”

My driveway looks like a skating rink. Starting on taxes, ugh.
