Do you step in when you see wrong doing?

I'll speak up in situations because I know what it's like to not be protected. If it put me in fear for my own safety, I wouldn't.

There was that case where at least one person was killed when a man stood up for two young woman on a train or bus in Portland Oregon. The perpetrator was crazed and attacked.

Some good Samaritans actually find themselves getting arrested for assaulting the perpetrator as being charged by a defense attorney since even touching a person without their explicit permission is a crime in itself. My best advice is to call the police, distance yourself and possibly others as quickly and safely as possible. Make note of the perpetrators description including weapons in his or her possession.

The Daniel Penny case.

Unfortunately this has become the case now where people are afraid to intervene, in case they are themselves arrested ...this is why we now have more people standing around filming an event than actively trying to stop it...

I am a complete and utter stepper inner... I see RED..absolute red.. if I see something happening that shouldn't be to someone else.. .. and can never stop myself from intervening if it looks like someone needs the help.... I am not a coward in any way shape or form, and will always stand up for people wherever I see an injustice (not to say those who don't intervene are cowards)... and even now at this age..I will do my very best to help someone if not physically any more.. but some other way.

I wish I had the wisdom of @Bretrick in the way he handled the abusive drunk... but I have my own ways...

I do but not in the all guns blazing style as that often just makes the situation worse. I also find that if one person steps forward in a calm way, other people tend to step forward too.

I once witnessed an American traveller yell "DROP IT BUDDY" as he rushed towards a thief trying to make off with a case he had just stolen. The thief just froze and dropped the case! The American had such a powerful voice and confident manner that it was all he needed. I'd love to be able to do that :)

Lately that term "snitches get stitches" has been on my mind
because of the number of homicides here in kansas city metro area, because I know that is why so many are walking free, repeating their crimes etc....wish someone would come up with
a phrase to combat that isssue that would get people talking
freely about crimes and who commit them....

Maybe, "crime gets time" but, of course, that is seldom true these days. It's astonishing the court cases you read about in the media and then the perpetrator walks away laughing with a community order or similar. :(

While a court can issue a witness anonymity order to protect a witness' identity, it's usually only done in special circumstances so, most people witnessing a crime, making a statement and appearing in court will be identified, even if it is just by their name.

Obviously if you were a witness in a court case, you would expect to be questioned in open court by both sides. Given that, it is understandable why a lot of people are not willing to get involved, particularly in cases where there is a possibility of repercussions. Unfortunately, fear works to the offender's advantage as few people would risk either their own safety or the safety of their family.

What? Why did this happen? On the surface, it sounds really sick. Where did you go to college, if you don't mind me asking? Just curious.
I understood their frustration. The professor had been a camp survivor in Poland during WWII and in order to survive he had a special way of viewing the world.

He was young, a student and a political prisoner which was even worse if it can be imagined than just an inmate who wasn't politically motivated. He couldn't bear ugliness and just refused to acknowledge it. I knew his history as a camp survivor from my mom who was also in academia and knew this man well..

His viewpoint made our class difficult and a lot of students struggled with him, and this was reflected in their grades. When they told me they wanted to send him hate mail, I decided to intervene and asked them to reconsider because he was a camp survivor and had seen things we could not imagine. So no one sent him him hate mail, and one of my friends in class talked to him personally and asked for help and he was kind and helpful.

The professor died a couple of years ago. He was nearly a hundred years old. He had a great life and taught what he loved. I was glad for him and have always been glad I spoke out on this occasion.

Anyone's life can be important.

Too many good Samaritan have found no good deed goes unpunished....

many will not stand up and frankly unless you see situation in its entirety you may miss who really is the person in the wrong.
I think of many a video clips played on news etc that when you get more background information...we find out there is more to a story.

Since I am invariably the target of the wrongdoing that I am seeing, I don't need to step in, since am already in by default. However, if by some very unusual and very unlikely exception I happen to see another person being abused and can render some type of assistance, then I would,

Yes, when I was young, but not as often now that I am older. Sometimes in defense of people, sometimes in defense of animals.

Once I was watering my lawn, we were at Camp Pendleton, and another wife was walking her dog down the street, and kicking the dog along. She drew near, I told her to stop. She wouldn’t. I turn the hose up to high, put the nozzle to full force, and sprayed the crap out of that woman, while avoiding the hitting the dog.

Told her next time I’d report her. She came down later to apologize.

Recently, at the mobile home park, I got involved with an acquaintance who was refusing to pay a disabled man for some yard work he did for her. I told her she had to pay him. Yak, yak, yak. She called me a couple names, whatever. Others joined the conversation. She finally paid.

People are horrific.

There is such a sense of entitlement by individuals. You should not abuse a dog, any animal, or another human being. Abuse is never acceptable. You should not refuse to pay someone for their work, even if their work is not to your personal standards.

The world is in sad shape because people don’t have the courage to get involved, but they do have the ability to complain. It’s sad.
