What was there??? That's really scary. I'm glad you are ok...I don't know what to think anymore. I did not get a call back from the manager here today and now must wait till Monday. Be safe.

There was no one there. It was strange. That was something new for me. Just seems like someone or something really wanted to get my attention. It hasn't happened again. Am l worried? No.
But with you ,Dusty, that was really strange like a real person had invaded your space. Make sure your building manager gives you all the information you need.

My thoughts this morning are leaning towards maintenance. Why? Because it was 10 a.m. and they *knocked* first. Someone wanting to "break in" wouldn't knock. Sounds as if they got scared when they realized someone was home which probably means they were not scheduled to do maintenance in that apartment and got scared when asked "who's there?"
Kind of like when housekeeping has to knock before entering a hotel room to be sure no one is there. The question remaining is whether or not management will cover.

@dusty - Check your lease to confirm who can enter your apartment and for what reason. File a police report on Monday, even if management does get back to you. Tell the police exactly what happened, that you informed management right away, and that maintenance and the manager denied entering your apartment. Additionally, let them know that the manager promised to review the camera footage and update you on the situation, but he never did.
Someone was in your apartment, and that person has a key. Management might change the locks, but I wouldn't count on them for anything else. Take the suggestions of others on this thread and immediately secure the door from the inside yourself. File a police report. There needs to be a record of this. If it happened to you, it could also happen to other tenants.

I live alone and close my bedroom door. as well...why wouldn't I ?.. what's a door doing on there if it's not meant to be closed?.. what if there was a fire, you don't have chance if the door is open... what about silencing noise from outside or next door?
I close doors for privacy. What am I being private for if I live alone? Sorry, seems strange to me. That's all.

I bet everybody whose ever died in a fire especially in apartment buidlings never said ''what fire , I've lived here a long time, and there's never been a fire''

I wonder why builders would put internal doors in one bedroom apartments if they're not meant to be closed...

I think it’s weird also. I purposely sleep with it open because if there’s a fire I want the dogs to hear the smoke alarm from the hallway and wake me up. If anyone was trying to break in I want them to hear that. It’s the reason I no longer crate my dogs since I live alone. I don’t want them off duty.
I only have one way out and that’s my front door. If I couldn’t escape there I would go on my balcony and open the window and call for help. Luckily my condo is right next to the stairs to escape. I keep the dogs harnesses right by the front door.

I feel the same, @Pepper ... I would feel trapped to not know what's going on in the house/apartment if I closed myself off. Like who or what is on the other side of that door... every little noise would have me wondering what's out there. I'd need a visual of the hallway, etc.

I live alone in a one bedroom apartment and I would never close my bedroom door.
In apartments with heating and A/C units it is important to keep air circulating.
It is also important to make sure that you can hear the fire alarm which is usually located in main area of apartment.
I don't sleep with my hearing aids in and doubt I would hear the alarm with the door closed.
As already said I do place something , usually my shopping cart, in front of my door, close enough to make a loud noise should anyone try to enter. That noise alone would stop anyone from entering.

I, too, keep my bedroom door open. For one thing, it helps circulate the air. Having it open also helps me hear what's going on in the rest of the house. And, when I have dogs, it allows them to freely enter my room at anytime.

Yes,you're misunderstanding. But then l haven't sent my autobiography to everyone yet.
I don't live alone. I share my joint ownership of the house with a relative since my dad passed away
and l have always kept my bedroom door closed and always will. And my housemate had nothing to with the pounding door.

My bedroom door is always closed at night. I do not have a dog or cat but if I did they would be sleeping in their own bed in another room.
