As we age our follicle are a little lazy and need a boost.[/FONT]


  • Eggs:
  • Our hair is made up of 70% keratin protein. Eggs are packed with protein and Biotin. This is why eggs are good for our hair. The protein in eggs helps repair damaged hair, and also strengthens hair.
  • Tip: Try to eat “pasture”, organic and cage free eggs on a regular basis.
  • Wash your hair. Mix 1 beaten egg with 2 Tbsp of raw organic olive oil.
  • Apply the egg mixture on your damp hair as you would a conditioner. Leave for 15 minutes. Wrap your hair in a towel. Rinse your hair thoroughly.
  • Coconut oil:
  • Coconut oil is hydrophobic which means it repels water. The reason why it is good for our hair is because of its ability to stop penetration of water into each strand which would make hair susceptible to damage. According to a study in the Journal of Cosmetic Science “Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft.”
  • Tip: Massage your scalp with 3 Tbsp of coconut oil and keep 30 minutes. Wrap you hair in a hot towel. Wash you hair with an organic shampoo.
  • Rosemary:
  • Author Valerie Ann Worwood, in her book “The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy,” recommends rosemary oil for hair growth. Worwood states in her book that rosemary oil promotes cell growth and dilates blood vessels, which helps stimulate hair growth.
  • Tip: Mix 3 Tbsp of coconut oil with 4 drops of rosemary essential oil and keep 15 minutes. Wrap you hair in a hot towel. Wash you hair with an organic shampoo.
  • Lavender:
  • Lavender essential oil can help prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. Numerous cases of hair loss can be attributed to a medical condition known as alopecia areata. Alopecia is a autoimmune disease that causes your body to consider hair follicles as foreign objects. Patients who massaged lavender oil onto their scalp daily saw significant improvement in hair growth.
  • Tip: Mix 3 Tbsp of raw olive oil with 5 drops of lavender essential oil and keep 15 minutes. Wrap you hair in a hot towel. Wash you hair with an organic shampoo.
  • Peppermint:
  • Peppermint is great for promoting hair growth for two reasons. One, peppermint is an antiseptic, so it kills bacteria on the scalp and provides a healthy environment for hair to grow. Two, peppermint stimulates circulation on the scalp, which stimulates hair follicles, therefore promoting hair growth.
  • Tip: Mix 3 Tbsp of raw olive oil with 3 drops of peppermint essential oil and keep 15 minutes. Wrap you hair in a hot towel. Wash you hair with an organic shampoo.
  • Lemongrass:
  • Lemongrass is known to fight hair loss, treat oily hair, and cure scalp conditions. It is an antibacterial, so it keeps your scalp in a good condition for hair growth. Lemongrass is believed to strengthen hair follicles, which is essential for preventing hair loss. It is combined often with rosemary and lavender to help treat hair.
  • Tip: Mix 3 Tbsp of raw olive oil with 3 drops of lemongrass essential oil and keep 15 minutes. Wrap you hair in a hot towel. Wash you hair with an organic shampoo.
  • Horsetail:
  • Horsetail not only prevents hair loss, but can also keep your hair looking healthy and shiny. Horsetail contains cysteine, selenium and silica, which are three essential ingredients for hair growth. Cysteine and silica help strengthen your hair, which prevents hair loss, and selenium helps your body process iodine, which stimulates hair growth.
  • Tips: Drink horsetail tea or take capsules. You can also apply the herb as a hair rinse.
  • To make tea or hair rinse: Boil 1 cup of hot water and add 2 teaspoons of horsetail leaves. Let it steep 15 minutes.
  • Drink the tea up to three times daily.
  • You can also apply the cold tea to dry hair and let it penetrate for 1o minutes before you shampoo your hair.
  • Caution: Please talk to your health practitioner before taking horsetail tea or capsules as it can lower your levels of vitamin B, or thiamin. Do not take horsetail if you are nrusing or pregnant.

  • Note: Don’t forget to use an organic shampoo and conditioner.

 

Good tips Lara, thanks. I used to use eggs sometimes or mayonnaise as a hair treatment. I do use olive oils in my diet and take coconut oil internally, and I think that really helps with hair and skin. I've gotten lazy in my old age when it comes to beauty treatments, experimented a lot more when I was younger. If I had noticeable hair loss though, I would definitely consider the olive oil and lavender oil combo as a natural treatment. :cool:
 
I use olive oil in my diet too seabreeze, and often rub coconut oil on my legs, feet, and arms.

I remember when I worked under lots of stress and my nutrition wasn't as good as it is now, my hair got a little thin. But the green juice I drink now makes my hair seem thicker and healthier. However, it doesn't have any of the ingredients mentioned in post#1. My green juice is kale, spinach, parsley, grannysmithapple, ginger, turmeric, lemon, celery, and cucumber. Sometimes I use dandelion greens instead of kale. I think it's mostly about just being overall healthy and stress free.
 

That juice sounds super healthy Lara, I take Turmeric and Organic Lemon Juice daily, the only thing green I use is Chlorella powder. I need to eat more veggies, but I don't, drinking them might be an option. I eat an apple (Pink Lady or Granny Smith) every evening for heartburn. Good to see others being proactive with the health in their senior years. :coolthumb:

I spray a product on containing biotin and caffeine. One sleepless night I wondered if the caffeine penetrates the scalp to keep me awake. Now I only spray in the morning.

It is all very confusing depending on the real cause.

Yes the caffeine will definitely penetrate into your scalp and keep you awake. Something I suggest is to massage your scalp for 5 minutes per day. Blood circulation will help with your hair loss.

Nice thread @Lara ! I’ve used many of the herbs you suggest including peppermint , horsetail and lavender. Peppermint is a great antibacteria herb. It’s in many soaps and shampoos.

I lost hair by the bunch due to stress. The initial diagnosis was genetics which naturally caused more stress.

What works for me is high dose of daily biotin and vitamin D, moisture intense shampoo/conditioner for swimmers, silk pillow case, fiber towel one patting dry only. No processing of any kind. If you are interested in Rogaine or related products please read up on effect on pets. I tried rosemary but SO wanted to know if it was pizza night. After about six month oncology had their thing under control and I now have about 55 inches of healthy hair. Color changed but that is nothing unusual.
Visit a beauty school in your area and have a chat with the program director. Most schools are not tied with a product so you can get real advise.

55 inches is a lot of hair. Until last year, I had 43 inches of healthy hair. Then I went into a depression and cut it all off. It’s now 4 inches from my waist which is long on me. I’m long waisted. My hair is also very curly so when I straighten it out it’s almost at waist. Luckily my hair grows fast. I can’t wait until it gets long enough to trim myself. Every 6 months or so I trim a tad off. The very back of my hair grows much faster than the sides.

Do you tie your hair back or put it in a bun?

I’ve got a huge variety of hair forks, beaded 8’s and clips. Once it gets to waist, which will be this summer, I’ll wear it up more often.

My hair is in much better condition since I stopped washing it daily or every other day. I also use Argan oil on the ends.

My hair is not as long as yours @PeppermintPatty but it is long enough to put up and I really like hair accessories, especially the claw grips which seem to be in all the shops now. I think I have them in most colours now. :)

Aww. My post WAS helpful to some. I deleted it cause it seemed a bit narcissistic.

Apparently we lose most of our hair when we wash it. On average we lose 100 hairs or more a day but when we wash it we lose closer to 300 hairs a day. I wash my hair about every 4 or 5 days. I’ve got very coarse, dry hair and also oil my ends. The great news is that I have no split ends. I never use a hair dryer or curling iron on it.

Those claw clips are great aren’t they ?
What other hair accessories do you have?
Do you ever use acrylic sticks or wooden hair forks? I’ve literally got hundreds of them.

Apparently we lose most of our hair when we wash it. On average we lose 100 hairs or more a day but when we wash it we lose closer to 300 hairs a day. I wash my hair about every 4 or 5 days. I’ve got very coarse, dry hair and also oil my ends. The great news is that I have no split ends. I never use a hair dryer or curling iron on it.

I haven't tried the ones in the photo but will look out for them (y) I think the best claw grips I have found are the Boots ones. I believe you have Boots Chemists in Canada?

That is definitely helpful. Most of my claw clips are neutral in colour so I’d like to get more in other shades of colours. I like my hair accessories to match what I’m wearing.

Surprisingly I find the longer my hair gets the easier it takes to look after it. I just brush it and put it in a ponytail, braid the ponytail and wrap the hair around the base. Then I clip or use a hair fork or sticks to pin it all at the back of my head.

I also don’t colour my hair. It’s all natural colour ; ginger and silver grey. Do you colour your hair ?

They are similar to ones that I have.

I have fair hair and occasionally get highlights done at the hairdressers so, any grey hairs don't stay for long. :) One of my friends had very dark hair so the grey roots really showed. She got fed up with dying it and has let it go grey which, actually really suits her, especially as she has really nice hair anyway.

If I had fair coloured hair I’d add highlights too but I had hennaed hair. When I had to colour my roots every 10 days I let it grow out. It literally took years to grow in
Out. . I envy people who have light coloured hair like yours. You are very lucky. 🍀
 
Why is it, as one ages, that hair mostly goes away where you want hair to be (in the case of guys, the head and chest), and then grows where you don't want it to be (nose, ears)?

One of life's perplexing issues.
My husband complains about hair growing in his ears. IMG_6546.gif It seems to be a common problem for men.

I’d like to add that the only reason I have hundreds of hair accessories was because we had an Etsy store and made them as well as sold them. When my husband retired he closed down the shop and I got the rest of them.

How do you normally where your hair on a daily bases? A braid? In a bun? Do you have many hair accessories.

I have a small box of lobster claws, some scrunchies, double prong metal pins which could double for kebab forks, three sterling crab claws and two old sterling barettes.

Your hair routine is so similar to mine. My hair is quite coarse and wavy/ curly. The first day I leave it down. It’s usually very curly the first day. The second day I brush the curls out and it becomes wavy so I braid it . The third day I also wear it in a braid. The fourth day I wear it in a bun. I’ve also got a collection of acrylic sticks so I can use them with wet hair. I made some of them myself on my lathe. Fifth day is hair washing day again. The longest I’ve had my hair was @ the very top of my thigh and that was 43 inches. I just figured that I’m 67 inches tall.
55 inches would be at knee length on me. You must be super tall or have very, beru curly hair.

My hair is from 2b to 3b in texture.
What hair texture do you have?

I don't know anything, Alizerine, but the caffeine may have penetrated to your blood and organs.
Maybe it could work better for you if you rinse your hair four hours before bedtime.
And temporarily keep your hair shorter for a healthier head of hair, maybe?
