Fire Close to Home!

Started yesterday morning, the pics are from mid-afternoon. About 8 miles south of our house, fairly close to a major source of water, Colorado River. They had it knocked down, but called it 0% contained this morning, by noon, smoke was billowing again. Believe it or not, what's burning is exactly what's seen in the wash in the foreground which passes across our lot! Hard to imagine desert scrub burning in such quantity and intensity. This AM they called it 2000 acres consumed, by noon PHX TV station said 5000; who knows? 4 homes destroyed, many families reported evacuated, these places are out in the County, smallest lot size is one acre, many much larger. The first home destroyed had pigs, goats, chickens, all safely herded away in time. I think some national news has carried this. imp

Fires like that are very scary, hope all the people and animals can be safe.

So far, they seem to be. 150 families on evacuation notice now. BLM says 8 buildings destroyed, type not specified. I tried to capture a good pic of two helicopters scooping water out of the Colorado, but it wouldn't go. I believe the more or less constant desert winds contribute much to the ability for fire to propagate through the seemingly meager desert plants. imp

That looks nasty. I hope there's no chance you'll have to evacuate. Be well.

As of this morning, I believe they were estimating it was 60% contained, they are getting the upper hand. imp
