Would You Share Good Gift Ideas?

I think I, or someone posted a thread like this last year. I think it's why I have a baclava now in NC. 😁
I am not good at gifts, mostly for son, daughter in law.
Anyone want to share good scores on gift giving?
I think a lot of us could use your cleverness. 🤗

My ideas will most likely sound lame to some ☺️ but there are two things that have been appreciated (and requested) by people on my gift list. One that's always appreciated is a gift card to a local (to them) supermarket. I'm thinking probably even more appreciated this year because of food price inflation.

The second thing (requested gift) is scratch-off lottery tickets. I don't play the lottery myself, so when requested, I usually say "but you may end up with nothing at all!" And the answer is "or with something fabulous!" So I buy $20 or $25 worth of scratch-offs, put them in a pretty box, and wrap 'em up. There have been wins every single year... sometimes not exceeding what the tickets cost, but once in a while there's a bigger win for more than I would have spent on a gift. (y)

If I'd be asked what *I'd* like, I think a paid few weeks to a meal box subscription like Hello Fresh would be cool.

When I was young, and my granny was still with us, we used to buy her saving stamps for her TV licence which was/is quite an annual expense...

I realise you don't have TV licences there , but I just thought if there's something similar that you can pay a portion of for someone on a low income, that's one idea...

Not lame!
Hello Fresh is a good idea for my daughter!

The people I give gifts to now are mainly "aging" ones. Normally it is something I find useful myself. Like a sock puller upper (don't remember the official name for it), which I have given to 3 people and they all loved it.

Another thing is a good back scratcher with a long handle made from bamboo. It is very useful and I have one myself. It is very frustrating when you can't scratch your own foot!

An insulated coffee mug or water cup is always welcome to most people. One other item I had was a coffee mug heater that you set your mug on to keep your cup warm.

A gift box of various kinds of coffee if they drink coffee.

on the subject of back scratchers... the most useful ones I find are the telescopic type . It means you can scratch something in the middle of your back .. easier.. than having it full length
I have both a Bamboo.. and telescopic...

I have 3 of those telescopic ones, one in the office, one in the bathroom and, most importantly, one in my car close at hand.

I asked for a mug warmer! 😊

The seniors of our circle are all over 80. Fruit baskets from Hale who we have had nothing but good experiences with for years.
MIL is in a nursing facility and bed ridden. Several sets of Cuddle Duds pjs with cuffs so the pants do not ride up and very soft matching bed jacket.
Mumsy is difficult. A cordless hot water kettle and good instant cocoa?
SO got the annual Hallmark ornament #19. It can get interesting when the guys go down memory lane with those minis. Sky's the Limit Hallmark Ornament Series at Hooked on Ornaments, Page 2
Pretty boxes with Christmas cookies and something small for friends. Bird food and a scooper, stick of salami and a bottle of wine, coffee and a box of filters, ... .
I found gold mesh in my stash. So everything got packaged in boxes wrapped with brown paper. Then bundled in gold mesh with huge gold bows, some gold bead chains and greenery.

The thing is if you're buying for the young..it's difficult to know what they want that they don't already have.. I think I would just give them the money or a gift voucher to their favourite online store.....or if they're people who go to the cinema or the theatre ..maybe some tickets to a favourite show.. or as I used to do with my daughter.. flight tickets..

..so i would print out a card which said that she could book a flight to X or Y place anytime during the following 12 months and i would pay for the tickets... she used this 3 times to travel from Spain to theuk back and forth

I thought of starting a new thread about horrible gifts - the gift worst you've ever given - the worst gift you've ever received. I guess this thread will do. The year my wife was pregnant, I gave her a dark brown dress with little orange hippopotamuses all over it.

Did she throw the pickle jar your way? After she had the last one.

Depending on who the recipient is I often give a gift or "side gift" of a holiday bag that I fill with "snacks."

These are usually various "snack/breakfast bars" from different sources. Some items this year:
  • Larabar Cherry Pie, Gluten Free Vegan Fruit & Nut Bar
  • Nature’s Bakery Whole Wheat Fig Bars, Raspberry, Real Fruit, Vegan, Non-GMO, Snack bar
  • Nature’s Bakery Whole Wheat Fig Bars, Blueberry, Real Fruit, Vegan, Non-GMO, Snack bar
  • Fiber One Chewy Bars, Oats & Chocolate Strawberry Fiber Snacks
  • Welch’s Fruit Snacks, Mixed Fruit, Gluten Free, Individual Single Serve Bags
  • Amazon Brand - Happy Belly Fruit & Nut Chewy Trail Mix Granola Bars
  • Amazon Brand - Happy Belly Fruit & Grain Cereal Bars, Mixed Berry
About 4 of each bar or bag. And I might toss in a few small chocolate "truffle" candies and such.

That's a lot of sweets, but the idea isn't to sit down and consume the entire bag. Good shelf life, and I chose them (in part) based on discounts and deals over the last 3 weeks.

Hey, beats giving fruitcake!

Those seem like good choices. But l must also be the only person on the planet who loves fruitcake.

I'm laughing beccause you didn't give it to me...lol.... but I can imagine yor wife's reaction.

We did have a worst gift thread a while back...

On my first Christmas age 21..with my new husband, ..the only precious son of my mother-in-law... she gave me a Grey flannel nightgown which reached to my feet.. up to my chin, and down to my wrists.. ...this is the same woman that still couldn't accept that her son and I were having sex , even after we had a baby, that when my daughter was 18 months old.. we went to stay at the in-laws for a week.. and she put my husband and me in seperate rooms...I'm not kidding !

It's almost impossible to tell what the young'uns want these days. What's hot this week is so-yesterday next week. Money is ALWAYS in style, it seems.

The "shopping spree" was very popular last year and the great-granddaughters been hinting about getting that again. DONE! I've printed up certificates, boxed them and wrapped them up. The granddaughters wanted instant cameras, so that's what they got.
