Have you ever given, or received the dreaded Xmas fruitcake?

I LOVE fruitcake ! And eggnog ! Since I only have it once a year, it is a special treat and I enjoy both of them in small amounts over the holiday season. I add a little eggnog to my morning coffee, and sometimes have a bit of the fruitcake.
My mom always got a fruitcake from the store when I was growing up, and it came in a beautiful painted tin that she saved and used for storing something else.
I just get the little Claxton one from Walmart, and it satisfies that craving for holiday fruitcake.

I ❤️ fruitcake. The bad rep can only have come from the evil in the world. I have it with every meal until it's gone. And eggnog, taken with sipping whiskey and/or, taken hot as a Tom & Jerry, until it's gone.

I hated it as a child. We had it every Hogmany.. it's tradition in Scotland where it' called Black Bun due to having so many fruits and alcohol in it to have it with a tot of whisky as the bells strike 12 .. *yuk*....

I can eat it today...a tiny piece once in a blue moon, but no more than that !

I'm getting hungry looking at it❤️

I’m a fan of fruitcake but can’t enjoy it anymore due to diabetes.

We used to serve thin slices of fruitcake with extra sharp cheddar cheese.

After the holidays we usually finished up the leftover crumbles with a warm nutmeg sauce.

Nutmeg sauce is also good over plain pound cake or a simple one egg cake. It is often called Cottage Pudding.

Nutmeg Sauce:
1/2c. sugar
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. boiling water
1 Tbsp. Butter
1 tsp. vanilla
Combine sugar, cornstarch, salt and nutmeg in a saucepan Add boiling water, cook, stirring constantly, until thickened; remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla.

Adjust the ingredients to suit your tastes.

Some recipes also include lemon juice, apple cider vinegar or cognac.
