Have you ever been to a roller rink?

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
I went once. I was 14. We were visiting my aunt in Manteca, CA and my cousin Marie who was a few years older took me along with her boyfriend and his younger sister. I had a great time. It was large wooden rink with organ music accompaniment. I don't know why this came to mind this morning.

Yes of course.. as teen we used to go to the Roller Disco on saturdays...I loved it... roller disco-ing to the lastest chart hits.

To this day whenever I hear certain songs it takes me right back to the roller rin...
this one in particular which they always played...

Roller skating was all the rage when I was growing up. There were several rinks in my community. I tried it, but didn't get the bug. I preferred bowling...:)

There was a popular rink around here up until 15 or so years ago. Then it went out of use.

There was a roller rink in my town in the 1940s and 50s but I was too young to go. I think it closed down in the 60s. Roller skating was done in the back streets with my friends. Moved to the Middle East mid 50s and my roller skate activity was replaced mainly by swimming and more swimming! Back in my home town now and there is a new rink which I have been to but only as an observer, watching my grandkids!

Nope!

In the early 80s I lived in an old apartment house and the apartment just inside the front door was an elderly lady that used to play the organ at skating rinks and silent movie theaters.

Sometimes you could hear her playing the peppy roller rink music on her organ.

I used to imagine the mirrored ball spinning and the skaters dancing in her living room. 😉🤭😂

Spent many hours roller skating at the local roller rink and loved it. It was the main attraction in our small town. Had my 13th birthday party there. I loved watching the kids who could do complex tricks and dances on skates. All I could do is forward and backward.

One day in 1968 my date and I got the inkling to try roller skating. So we went to the nearest rink. It was located in Oakland CA As we entered the floor we were um surprised to realize we were the ONLY white people there! Not to be daunted we tried to skate for the first time in our lives.

Needless to say we kept falling down. What IS needed to say .. every time we fell someone helped us up. We gained many friends and returned many times afterward, And the music was awesome.

Went several times when I was a kid. The roller rink is still here, open, lots of kids seem to still enjoy it! I have considered trying it again, bu the fear of breaking a hip....makes me hesitate, just like with downhill skiing - that makes me think I may wreck a knee or worse.

I rollerskated more on sidewalks all my life, though.

The rink used to come to us yearly when I was a small town kid. They would set it up in a vacant lot. We had a ball going round and round and there was always the possibility that a cute boy would skate with you. ;)

Once or twice in a resort town. I had no skills. There weren’t any rinks in my home town. I can’t recall seeing them in any small towns where I lived.

We didn't have any roller-skating rinks, but I did go to an ice-skating rink with some friends, we were only 16 at the time. I was terrified and hung on to the sides of the rink and slid over a few times. I ended up going home with wet pants and painful ankles. Never again.
