My name isn't "dear", "dearie" or "hon"

I don't get rankled easily but lately I've noticed that young women have started calling me "dear", "dearie" or "hon". Case in point, I was paying for some groceries last week and as the cashier was giving me my change, she said "thanks, dear". Later the same day I had a similar instance where another person called me "hon". I realize I'm not a young chick but I must be an old hen to these younger people. I don't mind if someone calls me "ma'am" but the other names ... no. It sounds insulting to me.

Have you encountered anything similar?
Yup I hear it all the time.
But, hey I am 78
Time I realize like an old dog .. I can't bite so I don't growl anymore.

Grandson to me when I asked him a question one day: "HUH"?
Me calmly: My name is not: "HUH, Paul".

A day or two later, am listening to grandson and his older sister talking in another room:
Grandson: "HUH"? His sister: "My name's NOT: 'HUH", Jack!"

I thought I'd crack up laughing.

Would you rather be called "Ma'am"? Ever since my first Ma'am, I have cringed and felt ancient. Even on the phone they do it to me, so I tell them my name and to use it.

I guess my name is stud. The girl at McDonalds, "What can I get for you today stud?" The bank teller lady "Good morning stud, are you making a deposit this morning?" Even the Motor Vehicle Office, "There seems to be a typo on your title, Mr Studly"

I think it says more about the other person than it does about you. How were they brought up? What part of the country are they from? Some polite southern boys call me ma'am. A guy from Maryland calls me hon. A middle eastern man at the convenience store calls me mom. I don't mind at all.

How awful!
Have you encountered anything similar?
Yes. Many people start their letters to me with, "Dear Inept". I find that terribly insulting. I would rather they write, "Hey You".

I find it very irritating when strangers and civil servants address me by my first name.
Here in Canada it is standard practice when you are admitted to the hospital to be asked " what name do you want to be called by the staff here ? My reply is' Call me Jim". On my health records I am listed as James, which also OK with me. JIM.

I think people are put off, distracted by being addressed wrongly. I am Grandma or Mom or Grunt or Mrs. Labor to certain specified groups, People know which group they belong to.
When they fail, I notice. I'm not necessarily offended, I just notice. It could be cultural, or age related.
Ma'am is an acceptable replacement. If you are offended by 'ma'am', I don't know what to tell you, I give up. People should not be expected to memorize your name for a one-off transaction.
We old people certainly complain a lot, don't we?
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I don't care about most endearing singular names. I do take objection to Honey Buns or Sugar Pie. Adding the second word seems to add an unwanted element. I don't mind Ma'am at all. Girl, Chickee, or such is also fine with me if by other females.

Can we please be done with this thread? Please. Everything that can be said has been said. There's gonna be someone somewhere who's going to be insulted no matter what they're called.

For heaven's sake, Just. Please. Stop.
