I'll try to remember that Jingles, and I'll ring extra hard up ta' the Bar K ranch next time. This conversation reminds me of the old saying, "You can call me anything but don't call me LATE FOR LUNCH"!

Just share. We were out somewhere the other day and the clerk called my husband "honey," and it seemed a little odd to me. He's my honey, not hers!
Pepper, I am deeply moved. I hope that I am worth of this compliment.I agree. I love @George1959
Hmm yeah I wouldn't care for that.I got called "pops" the other day. I'm 78. And I'm not that "78 years young" crap, I'm 78 years old. But I was annoyed about the "pops" thing. I don't think the guy, who called me that had any intention of insulting me. It was more of an affectionate term. Still, POPS!!!!
Maybe, I might have over reacted. Just a smidge.
Bigger fish to fry comes to mind.I get the feeling that some people would complain regardless of what people called them.
Yup I hear it all the time.I don't get rankled easily but lately I've noticed that young women have started calling me "dear", "dearie" or "hon". Case in point, I was paying for some groceries last week and as the cashier was giving me my change, she said "thanks, dear". Later the same day I had a similar instance where another person called me "hon". I realize I'm not a young chick but I must be an old hen to these younger people. I don't mind if someone calls me "ma'am" but the other names ... no. It sounds insulting to me.
Have you encountered anything similar?
I bet that grocer never gets held up!There is a cashier down at the village grocery who calls me honey or dear every time she waits on me. She also open carries a 40 cal automatic on her hip every day so I have never felt like bringing the issue of pet names up with her. We just get along fine.
How awful! My name isn't "dear", "dearie" or "hon"

Yes. Many people start their letters to me with, "Dear Inept". I find that terribly insulting. I would rather they write, "Hey You".Have you encountered anything similar?
Here in Canada it is standard practice when you are admitted to the hospital to be asked " what name do you want to be called by the staff here ? My reply is' Call me Jim". On my health records I am listed as James, which also OK with me. JIM.I find it very irritating when strangers and civil servants address me by my first name.
I think people are put off, distracted by being addressed wrongly. I am Grandma or Mom or Grunt or Mrs. Labor to certain specified groups, People know which group they belong to.I find it very irritating when strangers and civil servants address me by my first name.
Dang. Just when I was fixin' to post sumthin. Can we please be done with this thread? Please. Everything that can be said has been said. There's gonna be someone somewhere who's going to be insulted no matter what they're called.
For heaven's sake, Just. Please. Stop.
You don't have to obey anyone's "orders" here; let those who object not read.Dang. Just when I was fixin' to post sumthin.

"Honey Buns"?I don't care about most endearing singular names. I do take objection to Honey Buns or Sugar Pie. Adding the second word seems to add an unwanted element. I don't mind Ma'am at all. Girl, Chickee, or such is also fine with me if by other females.
