Yes, it is a real thing….
Apparently, this is how cats find their people. If you have ever had a kitten suddenly appear when you were out for a walk, or maybe just show up on your porch, and you rescued it and fell in love , that was the Cat Distribution System at work.
Don’t believe me ? Just google it and all sorts of answers and memes will show up. This is a real thing !

So, how did I happen to discover this, you might ask .
I have mentioned Kitten Little, the tiny kitten who showed up on our porch one day, from somewhere. She barely looked old enough to be away from her mother, so we looked for more kittens hiding somewhere and hopefully, a mother cat who was taking care of them.
No other kittens, no mother cat.
Just Kitten Little.

My daughter is home on vacation from her job overseas, and she ws telling me about the Cat Distribution System, and had to google it to show me that it does indeed exist.
This is Kitten Little the day she showed up on our porch early in November, scared and hungry, and SO tiny.

Blizzard in Oklahoma and indoor cats are acting crazy. Something is sitting in a bowl of cracked corn on the porch and trying to eat it. Heavy gloves and a box. This is not a day to be outside. It was tiny, scared, hungry and had everything that could be wrong with feline. Izzi and Bizzi. Izzi for wizard as she would not have made it through the night and Bizzi for the tail which is still as big as the rest.

Yes, there is a cat forum out there!

We were selected in 2011 as the Can Opener of Choice by this sweet stray. Had a dog collar doubled around his neck so someone probably abandoned him. He's not by nature adventurous or bold so we doubt he's a runaway.

I had to search through Google to ID him. Egyptian Maus are extremely rare in the US - less than 800 registered. He's got a cauliflower ear so not show quality.

I am a cat lady without a cat at the moment. I am too old to adopt a kitten with a long life span but I am trying to foster an older cat to make the world brighter for both of us.
In the meantime I love checking in daily with "I Can Has Cheezburgers." They are a delight and often mention the Cat Distribution System. It has smiled on me often over the years.

Do you still have Kitten little @Happyflowerlady

That's not my cat... but, maybe I want it to be? Inside the cat distribution system

"Across the U.S., if someone wants a cat, it could seemingly come from anywhere: The junkyard, the grocery store parking lot, underneath an abandoned car − making a trip to the animal shelter unnecessary for those who receive their cat allotment through other means."

"But the reality behind the magic of the cat distribution can be grim: There are so many stray cats in the U.S. that the ones who make it to shelters are a small sliver of the population, Zweigart said."

"There are far more cats being born and looking for homes then there are available homes," Zweigart said.

The downside of the 'cat distribution system'

"Fried and Zweigart said they don't fully believe in the cat distribution system because the phenomenon can cause more harm than good."

"Too often, Zweigart said, a cat that already has a loving owner will get scooped up by someone who's a little too excited about getting their allotment from the cat distribution system."

"I wouldn't want someone to see a cat and think some larger forces are at work and accidentally steal their neighbor's cat who's perfectly fine," Zweigart said. "Particularly if you don't live in that area, you need to be very careful about just scooping up any cat."

'The cat distribution system works hard but mechanics work harder': Garage Finds Kitten Stuck in Car Engine, Adopts Her and Names Her "Horse Hair"

"If you didn't already know, when it gets cold out stray cats and other small creatures will sometimes sneak under the hood of your car to curl up to the warmth of your engine. It's very dangerous and that's why it's encouraged to give your hood a little *thud thud* before starting it to see if you hear any meowing or to scare off any little critters inside. "

Someone threw a cat they didn't want off a bridge near my house in 2003. I heard them stop on the bridge and did something and take off. The next morning, when it was still dark I heard a cat meowing. My dog went outside and chased it away. She came back. I found her on top of the propane tanks and I fed her there. The next day she was at the door. With a hole in her head, her eyes bleeding, no front teeth and her nose bleeding too I started doctoring her the best I could. She did not trust me and would not come into the house. Essiac tea saved her life though.

Finally I won her over. She lived to be 17!

This is Hobo but not the first or last cat I acquired that way.
