I know most people here won't watch long-form video. I realize it's tough to have shoved in your face, but I think there is also an element of "sound bite culture" at play: "Chew my food for me, network talking heads."

Dimitry Toukhcher has outfitted renowned figures such as Jordan Peterson, Lennox Lewis, and Alice Cooper. He is a businessman and entrepreneur born in the former Soviet Union.

This is fascinating, and it roams and weaves around so many of the issues we now struggle with. An hour:

If anyone watches it I wonder what your take is on the guest's points of view from his vantage point?

No, it's not that. Some of us are so busy with a lot of stuff that the thought of sitting and focusing on something that'll take another 15 minutes or more on any particular day can seem a little much for that day but maybe more possible on the next day or so l appreciate that it takes a lot of your time, research, and effort to present a topic the way you do.

I love what he's wearing.
He's pretty dapper, but a high-ticket tailor ought to know his clothes!

While this might seem like an unlikely topic to interview him on, he's seen a lot close-up that we never will. He brings his own perspective as well with a background very different from most of ours. While our grandparents or their parents may have personal roots in the other hemisphere, most of us who are in the Americas have not lived those experiences.

One thing the discussion goes into is the dilemma women face in leadership positions with regard to fashion. He cites examples of cases that were really strong and why, and others that didn't work so well. It's a challenge men don't really face, since there is already an established "uniform" they don't need to stray far from.

He doesn't claim to have the answers, but he knows those androgynous monochromatic pantsuits have never cut it.

But I think women know far better than I do how important fashion is to image.

Women in pantsuits needs to be rethought. If running for political office, they are more likely to lose. I cannot claim to understand why. In Europe women have held government positions while wearing dresses or formal suits with skirts and they've been doing great for decades. I don't understand this either but perhaps Europe is more used to women in positions of authority because they've had queens, princesses and Empresses. In this regard, exposure to a monarchy actually helps.

Is he the one who designs the interesting jackets that Peterson wears? I have only watched a short bit so far.

Chic - Mama Merkel wore long skirts at formal occasions.

Well Deduced Chic..I'd never given it a thought until now you've mentioned it...

certainly here in the Uk the female leaders all wore skirts and skirt suits the majority of the time ..the Queen, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.. Scottish First minister Nicola Sturgeon... and now the new Queen Camilla.. and the Princess of Wales Catherine..

All I know is that he's done some custom tailoring for JP after making an effort to acquire his business.

I suppose I was fascinated to see that a high-placed "tailor" has definite views on wide-ranging topics in politics and society at large. Even after achieving professional success he found ways to challenge himself and go after high profile clients. He admits to his own ideological leanings, but he doesn't proselytize.

It's easy to pigeonhole people based on a single dimension such as occupation.

I'm still working on how slitted jeans/pant legs became a fashion statement.

Labels I get for those that want status and keep up with the Jones's. Some use fashion to their advantage to hide and deflect others use it to project 'sucess'. In some respects it's a costume if not uniform.

IMO it’s sad that we meddled in their lives and tried to impose our way of life on them.

Sadly, we haven’t learned much.

Hopefully it will be different when we make Canada a state. 😉🤭😂
I apologize to my Canadian friends in advance. I meant in 1978 the Shah of Iran was overthrown and the Taliban took control. IDK if Iran was restrictive before the Shah but I don't believe so. They were the royal family and more European than not.

That's funny. :ROFLMAO: Sort of like we won WW2 because the guys smoked real tobacco, but then in Vietnam, they smoked marijuana and got their butts whipped.:ROFLMAO:
We were talking about clothing, not tobacco. That's true. They were too stoned in Vietnam to do anything.

My story about pants suits is very uninteresting. I had two back in the seventies, one homemade and one from a boutique, and neither was appreciated by anyone including me. Campaigning for city counsel wearing them, led to my losing by a landslide to a good old boy. I always thought it was exposing the good old boy for shady dealings, but now I know it was the pants suit.

The title of the thread mentions Culture. Arguably one of the most assertive, yet aggressive appearances has to be that of the 1920's Chicago gangsters. They look resplendent in what was known as The Zoot suit. But don't be fooled.

I remember when women were first allowed to wear pant suits to work. My wife got an official company memo stating that pant suits were only allowed if the top was worn outside rather than tucked in, and the top and bottom had to be made of matching color and fabric.

I'm in the middle of watching this but had to stop to say that it is very interesting!
