"Checking In" Daily With Friends/Family

Do you "check in" daily with friends?
Maybe call or text once a day?
Just to let them know you're ok?

Two instances stay with me:
My Mom's friend had a son that lived alone and passed away,
he wasn't found until several days later.
An acquaintance of mine who lives alone went into his basement and woke up in the hospital.
He remembers nothing.
He was "grey" (his words) when they found him.

I went into the basement for the first time in several months yesterday.
No one else was in the house.
I'd been apprehensive of late, what if I slip and fall like my acqaintance, etc?
I've even thought of letting someone know, like...
"I'm going in the basement, if I don't call or text in a hour, come and get me...'

Paranoid?

I wouldn't call it paranoia .. I would call it being cautious, and, sensible. Perhaps you might consider getting one of those things you wear around your neck, that puts out an S.O.S. if you should fall?

No, not paranoid. I think if I were a friend or relative I would want to know if you need someone to 'be aware'
Heck, I don't have anyone to really call. I would find a local fire dept and let the crew up there know, or just call a non-emergency sheriff dept and tell the dispatcher "I am alone, and XX years old...am going to be down in my basement, if I don't call you back in 60 minutes, call me..." etc.
I was a dispatcher for 9 fire companies...we took all sorts of calls for precautions.

I use Snug Safety, an free phone app. If I fail to check in by 9 AM daily, they notify my emergency contact who has keys to my house and will come check on me.

In 2025 you expect fire or pd to check on you if no call back in 60?

Yes and no that folks check on me. My “baby” brother checks on me enough that I don’t have to check on him.

I have a routine with the horses. I always go to the barn on the four wheeler and take the manure cart to the manure pile when needed. The neighbors know if they don’t hear my 4-wheeler, it might be time to worry.

Plus my neighbor through the woods is a deputy sheriff. They keep an eye on the goings on.

This is slick! Simple and slick👍👍
My son who lives not far, texts me each evening with the letter X.
If I don't return the X, he'll try again or call. He has a key, and if still no response he'll come over.

I play a mobile game called Wordfeud with my older sisters and a couple of close friends. It is a scrabble type of game and less flashy than Words With Friends. Anyway, one reason we play it is to unofficially check in with each other on a daily basis without appearing to be checking in with each other. If my sisters or friends don't make a move for a long length of time I will check up on them with a phone call and same if I don't make a move.

It’s good to be concerned and it’s great if you have a support network that will come to your assistance.

I try to carry my iPhone and hope that in the event of an emergency I’ll be able to dial 911.

I’ve also given thought to upgrading to an iPhone and watch that have fall protection.

I’ve been a bit reluctant to consider one of the services available because I don’t really have a good contact person that would be able or willing to respond.

Adding a lockbox to one of your seldom used entrance doors might be something to consider.

Wear a smart watch,. you can set it to send out an alarm if you fall over.

  • The watch detects that you've been immobile for a period of time
  • The watch taps your wrist and sounds an alarm
  • The watch starts a countdown
  • If you don't respond, the watch calls emergency services
  • The watch sends your location to your emergency contacts
Which watches have fall detection?
  • Apple Watch: Series 4 and later models have fall detection. If you're 55 or older, fall detection is turned on automatically.
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch: The Active2, Galaxy Watch3, and other Wear OS models have fall detection.

I have one of those fitted on my outside wall

My DD calls and texts several times a week... she also has a set of keys to this house...

Nothing wrong with the post. My stepfather wanted me to do that because his niece's daughter does that daily. Well with his hearing impairment, after a couple of days, he "forgot" to call me, so I went out to his place. The stress he has caused me... So I told him, sorry but it won't work. He refuses to learn to text. I tried and tried. Even got a phone. He won't do it. And my brother contacts him every few months but he's the one who really cares.

I don't check in daily but weekly which isn't that great but better than not at all.
Either I text her or she texts me. I find it difficult to ask any more people. Everyone is always busy anyhow. I do keep my phone 🤳 📱 close though.
