Hoping everything goes well, hollydolly!

My wife's surgery was at The Nuffield Hospital in Bournemouth. At the time it felt "wrong" because we have both paid our tax and stamp and my wife had worked for the NHS in the ambulance service, all her working life. Reading of your experience Holly and the belligerent attitude of the receptionist, has given me a change of heart. Now I think that the Nuffield was money well spent. So sorry for your experience.
Well I'm really pleased you chose to go private, and my experience might not have been your wife's experience in an NHS hospital where you live.. there's lots of people who have positive experiences with the NHS..but the majority don't, and I hadn't realised even reading about it in the media, just how bad it had become...

The last thing you need when you're poorly enough to need surgery is this type of traumatic experience.. and if it's possible to avoid it by paying privately I would highly recommend it

I would most likely cramp up with not doing H2O 8 / 10 hours and confined to a uncomfortable chair position.
I could think a Hospital would have back up emergency plans for surgeries. Not wondering along in a drunken like haze
of innuendos P... & S.... stuff. I would rapidly over that afternoon loose all faith in the system of the City health provisions.
I could understand the great flood, a nuke hitting, awful weather / fires and injuries, but just another normal day of B.S. ?
I can imagine the Stress on the system around L"A" right about now? Many yelling, "take me to Vegas," about now!

Hospital workers must get calloused after a while seeing people in the worst of conditions, in pain and some even eventually dying, and seeing it over and over. It's just another day. It makes them numb to it.

I would suggest another hospital too. It couldn't be any worse apparently.

that's the problem... if I could have a drink I might not have felt qute so bad.. but no drink since midnight the night before.. until I was discharged in the early evening... that meant 17 hours without any fluid... I thought I might die ( I'm a person who drinks a lot of water during the day)...

I asked if I could have a drink. they said no.. then I asked someone different they said they would get me a drink, they didn't.. I asked a 3rd person she said she would but it can only be small, so I begged her to not forget because I'd asked 2 people before her.., she didn't return... eventually the pill I was given to take on the orders of the anesthetist meant they had to give some water but it was only a third of a small styrofoam cup

Knock, knock....is anybody here /....wow...I'm overwhelmed.... Thank you everybdy...I'm baaaackk !....
I'm soooo glad!!!

The admissions unit was packed..I got there just before 7am in Torrential rain and high winds .. the unit was closed.I sat down alogside another man, both of us had 7.30am appts... we thought we were the only ones. The waiting area outside was next to the lifts.. by the time the unit opened it was 7.30am.. and people had emerged from the lifts like a football crowd, so there was abut 60 peple waiting to go in and all had appts for 7.30am

No-one had had anything to drink or eat for the previous 12 hours.. over the next 2 hours we were all processed in the super overheated unit, names checked, BP taken..etc... then the surgeons' apprentice came and checked where the surgery was to be done and marked it wth an arrow...

people were getting taken in for surgery on external limbs..face.. legs..knees..etc...everyone was very thirsty..

My surgery was scheduled for the morning... at around 11am, the surgeon came himself and had a look at me, and said, this surgery has to be done today but it won't be until the afernon now...apologies..
So..back I sat down.. not allowed to see what was going on left or right of me... just straight ahead... no-one telling us what's going on...

Next someone comes and says get into a gown and compression socks... and now you have to put all your clothes into a small carrier bag that they provided.. I said my clothes won't fit in.. and without any airs or graces they just grabbed my clothes and rammed them literally into a carrier bag including my big coat... .

the aneasthetist then came to see me and she told me all what was about to happen etc... ... then I sat there,, and watched in front of me as male after male was taken to theatre, and brought back with bandaged limbs....

Still verrrrry thirsty.. now 4pm everyone has gone exept me..I get told the patient before me is in theatre, and I'll be next... sat there again until 7pm ..when a nurse came and said...sorry your surgery can't go ahead... we have no beds ! I really thought she was joking, because she said it in a humurous way... but she wasn't joking... she said the surgeon was unhappy about it , but they just had no beds..

So I'd gone 18 hours without a drink, or food.. had all the other stuff happen, and then when I got dressed to go home I looked like a scarecrow because everything was creased from being rammed in the carrier bag

Finally I got a tiny cup of water ...and then I asked them how was I to get home..my dd had been scheduled to collect me tomorrow ( today )... so they called the hospital manager explained what happened and the hospital paid for a cab

I was exhausted when i got home and went straight to bed...
OMG I just want to cry! What in the world has the first world come to? The third world I guess. 😒
I'm so sorry dolly. 💐😔

OMG..look what my neighbours have just brought me.

They are having a party, they're Romanian and they have visitors from overseas as well..

There was a ring at the door and I opened it to see the husband with some foil covered plates.. he said his wife had told him about my surgery etc.. so they wanted me not to have to cook.. look at his for an exceptional food offering.. and I've already tasted some of it.. absolutely delicious..❤️
There's sausages, chicken, steak , Rice balls, dough balls , some things I don't know what they are.. but all of it is hot and freshly cooked

I'm so sorry you had that awful experience in the hospital, I totally agree with your daughter.

I understand not having a lot of water in a person's stomach but surely being dehydrated is not a good state to be in when having surgery? I'm shocked they didn't give you an IV of saline while you were waiting for the expected surgery.

Do your dentist and knee consultant do wait-lists? I've had good luck in the past getting dentist appointments that way, even when they are all booked up for the next year there always seems to be a lot of people who cancel dentist appointments at the last minute.

yes that's the amusing thing. because everywhere I looked on the walls of the wards it had posters saying how important it is to drink..to keep yourself hydrated ..I also understand you can't have much water before surgery.. but 17 hours ?.. that's got to be more harmful than harmless..

The knee cosultant is like a God , he summons you, you have to go, or you wait another year..he's a private consultant doing some little bit of work for NHS patients..

My dentist does have waiting lists like you mean.. but I've already cancelled with them twice now due to this aborted surgery, and we're only allowed to cancel 3 times before take us off their register, and believe me trying to get an NHS dentist in the UK is worse than trying to get a hospital bed so no-one wants to be taken off a dentists register

Apparently according to Radish Rose on my ''How was your day thread''..I was probably just in hospital for weight loss surgery !

How is your day Today? Chat about your plans and achievements 2025....
I always say, consider the source. @RadishRose is a compassionate source so I would assume that was an honest faux pas. Besides, many people are having weight loss surgery these days, whether they need it or not, in some cases.
I just hope you having to wait on your surgery is not going to have a dramatic effect on your health. 🤗
I'm still mad about that!! 😡

Wish I had neighbours like yours, it all looks yummy. So sorry to hear about your experience with the NHS hopefully they will be able to reschedule and not put you to the back of the list. Those stories are the same here. A friend in Vancouver had her surgery reschedule 3x third time lucky, she to did not live close to the hospital and had to be there very early. It makes a bad situation worse. Not only worrying about the surgery but also recuperating afterwards, that is a lifestyle change for a while.🙏

precisely.. as you say not living near the hospital as I don't either, so it's expensive cab fares if you have no-one to collect you or take you.. we're not allowed to take our own cars because of the anesthesia ..and then agreed.. when you live alone the recuperating for some weeks is very difficult...

I'm sorry Canada is experiencing similar things... :(

That sounds literally like a nightmare, @hollydolly. I have to add my voice to the chorus saying "So sorry you had to endure that!"

I'm sure you were much more gracious than I would have been. I would have been fuming!

Again, so sorry. But that plate your kind neighbors dropped off looks delicious!
don't be mistaken I was fuming, and I told them so, I said this is totally unacceptable... but I couldn't actually take my anger out in the nursing staff it wouldn't have got me anywhere.. but you could bet your life they knew I was upset...

yes the food is so tasty from my neighbours. The BBQ everything when they have company

do you know what..I heard that at least 3 times in the waiting room before we were called into the ward bays.. people saying just how much this has become like a 3rd world country..even the cab driver said it and he was Romanian

he said when he was growing up, he'd watch films on tv and want to go to the UK because everything was so lovely and the people were so nice.. he said he's been here 9 years now and wants to go home because of the way the country has now become..nothing like his childhood dreams

Do your best to contact the surgeon and explain what happened and why the new date offered is not possible. He told you this needs to be done now. He may have a way to get an earlier date. He’s your best hope.
