Kind of a crappy day today. I've been so good in battling my depression lately, getting up (relatively) early each day, making the bed, showering, exercising, staying on top of my deadlines, etc. Today it kind of all fell apart. :cautious:

Here's hoping I can get back on track tomorrow.
I've been trying. I did shower and get dressed today and cooked supper, but the bed didn't get made. >le sigh<

Having a job would do worlds of good, but I need a car to get a job and need a job to get a car (closest public transpo is two miles away).

Good Monday morning, all!

Went to my GD's birthday party yesterday - great fun. It was held in a public library's large, open space meeting room - at least 1200 square feet. We set up the tables, chairs, food (taco bar), games, crafts, etc. Great price for the space: $50 for 3 hours. (1 for set up, 2 for the party.) Clean up was a breeze.

In keeping with the library theme, crafts included decorating blank bookmarks and lightweight canvas library bags to take home. The candy favors were little bags of gummy "bookworms." It was all very clever - kids and adults had a great time.

Couldn't have fire in a library building, obvs, so no candles on the cake. Then one of my DILs pulled up something on her phone that showed a lit candle - when GD blew on the screen, the candle went out! Who knew such things even existed? (Turned out nobody there except DIL!) 🤣

Fire update: The weekend rainstorm has fully (or nearly so) extinguished the Los Angeles area fires. Although the rain triggered a few isolated mudslides in recently burned areas, none are catastrophic. Some road and local schools are closed for a day or two until emergency crews sort out the problems.

It has been a very difficult few weeks for Los Angeles. I'm grateful to all here who checked on me, worried over me and other Angelenos, prayed for the fire fighters, and empathized with the people who suffered terrible losses from these wildfires.

What a creative and fun party! 📚

And am so glad LA’s rain has been enough to help with fires but not enough to trigger serious landslides. Praying for people who have lost so much.

The reason I want a car is because I want to go somewhere every once in a while all by myself. Unaccompanied and just getting to wherever and getting back home on nobody's timeline but my own. A different kind of me time.

Oh. And because I want a job so there's somewhere to go where I'm needed (and paid for it!).

My wife has her own car, one with all-wheel drive. I've got a compact 4-wheel drive pickup. It's a good arrangement for us. Whenever one of us needs the other's vehicle for something, we allow that.

In her life, she's only received one speeding ticket ($165) but it was in her car.😉👍

@JBR You haven't been on SF long enough to know that I'm 84 and gave my car away at 80. I didn't want to be one of those old ladies who goes to the store for a loaf of bread and is found in a cornfield in flyover country the next week. Well. Doesn't look like I'm in much danger from that.

I worked until this past summer, but it was always on DD to take me to work (at 4am) and pick me up. (I live in a granny flat attached to her house).

Now the only opportunities to go anywhere are if I ask or she invites me, but going anywhere means that she and her DD go, too.

Like Garbo, sometimes "I vaaaahnt to be alone!"

Senior groups, senior transportation by request?

It must have been hard to give up your wheels. You were smart though as a lot of people only give it up after they've had a serious wreck.
I understand the being alone part. I do like to get in my car and go off. However with electronic spying through our phones and car computers are we ever truly alone nowadays? That cornfield could be the only place. But probably not.Cameras everywhere.

We just had meatloaf too. With baked potato and green beans and carrots.
It just feels like comfort food weather.
I'm n nd of tired of pizza too.
My mother and her sister often laid strips of bacon on top of the meatloaf.

Sometimes, just before it was done, they drained excess grease, surrounded the loaf with frozen peas and some canned plum tomatoes on top w/ a bit of salt and pepper. That, with baked potatoes and some fresh sliced cucumbers at table was a complete meal.

Yes, we can be. My truck has nothing that can be tracked.

Same here. I like alone, go all by myself, no timeline. Job: exactly! I hope you get one and have a great time doing it!

All this scotch egg talk got me curious so I googled. Sometimes the internet earns its keep! That looks really tasty🤠🤠.

Today was my chiropractor day (as opposed to the horses). I have spinal decompression followed by an adjustment. I can’t say enough good about spinal decompression. I put it off for a long time because one is strapped down to the table and I am claustrophobic. I have found if I keep my cell phone in my hands, I’m fine - it’s my umbilical cord to the outside world and if the tech forgets to come and get me, I can call the front desk😂😂

I then went to the feed store for dog food and a few bags of the chopped hay the horses like as treat after they eat. They have 24/7 access to baled hay plus 19 acres of pasture, but the elder horse loves this chopped hay and I can’t leave the younger horse without any.

Driving: I am 77 and still running on eight cylinders mentally (believe me my younger brother checks on me🙄🙄. but my drivers license needs renewed this year. They won’t let me renew it online. That means a trip to town to get my picture taken. I still have a few months, to have one of those days when my hair looks really great and I should go somewhere 😂😂. Thankfully my hair is barely gray so I should be able to go into the DMV looking annd talking spry enough to get renewed without question.

This getting old business stinks. When I was young and made a speaking hiccup, people laughed. Now they look at you like you’re literally losing it. I find that I am a lot more conscious of how I speak than I used to be.

You sound pretty good to me. You sound like a youthful hard worker and a wonderful horse mommy. Bet you can dance, too. :)

@hearlady You're right! The corn has ears, and potatoes have eyes :ROFLMAO:

@Imogene No problem getting old at all because it only happens a day at a time. It's actually being old that's the problem.

Anyway, my idea about a car is that I'd have two things installed: remote start for heat and defroster in winter and a/c in summer before I get in and a GPS tracker. Tracker, yanno, so that if somebody decides to kidnap me or if I do end up in a cornfield in Kansas, I can be found without too much trouble.

My NuWave Oven died last night mid-cycle while heating dinner. So shortly after midnight I was shopping on Amazon for a new appliance; decided not to get another Nu Wave. Found what I wanted fairly quickly. Never heard of this company, but both Cosori toaster oven/air fryer plus units that I looked at got excellent reviews and were about $70 cheaper than similar NuWave products.

At 10:00 aa.m. I walked to supermarket; figured I'd better get what I needed today because snow is predicted for tomorrow morning and sleet for Wednesday. That wind was so cold on my face that I changed my mind about going down to the laundry room later. However, I did finish making the liquid soap and got the kitchen cleaned up earlier than usual..

Scotch eggs are good but, not the ones you buy ready made in packs in the shops.

Soft or hard boil the eggs. You mix the sausage meat with herbs (chives, parsley, nutmeg or whatever you like), salt and pepper and English mustard. You roll out the sausage meat and wrap each egg in sausage meat. You then dip the egg in flour, egg and then breadcrumbs and fry until the sausage meat is brown and crisp. Alternatively, if you don't eat fried food, you can bake them. I recently discovered you can cook them in an air fryer which, I will be trying next time I make them. I usually make them in the warmer weather, they are great with salads. :)

Is a NuWave like a microwave oven? When my microwave needs replacing, I am going to be looking at microwaves which also air fry. A couple of my friends have bought them and, apparently, they are very good.
