Should Southern California be renamed?

There is the state of California. No such state called 'Southern California'.
Besides why rename something that's not bothering anyone?

No one bothered in Southern California?
Just ask pretty much everyone without water in their fire hydrants, a Mayor who left for Ghana when the fires arrived, an incompetent Governor who ran the state dry in order to save some tiny smelt fish, and everyone who's left with only an empty lot of cinders. Everyone from "Sea to shining Sea" is bothered.

SoCal has a lot going for it...a tech mecca, lots of farmland, beautiful beaches, and the film industry. The only thing it doesn't have enough of is potable water. All that is in NoCal.

People have talked about making Calif into 2 states for a long time. Whether the border should be north or south of San Fransisco is a major argument, but water is the main sticking point.

Usually, the argument ends where NoCal promises to charge giant fees for supplying water to SoCal, and insists SoCal taxes pay for all water-delivery infrastructure south of the new border. SoCal's retort is charging northerners massive food delivery fees, but that argument literally doesn't hold water.

Lara, I generally don't take you to task, but Please. Just. Stop. Your words are hurtful and heavily skewed based on whatever news you choose to watch or read.

Not sure what state you live in, but surely to heavens it's not perfect. Notice that when hurricanes rip through "Mid-Atlantic coast states", California citizens don't pile onto your misery by blaming or second-guessing from afar your mayors, governors, ecological decisions, and so forth.

As far as the smelt go,
The Californian Delta Smelt Controversy

"At this point biologists don’t think the smelt can bounce back from their current dire state, and it’s likely that the little fish is headed to extinction in the next few years, as it would take a massive amount of changes to the current water management system to keep them around.

So why do they continue to fight? Because it’s not just the smelt that are suffering. It’s also the salmon and the killer whales and the whole ecosystem in the delta. If the smelt go, and California does nothing to their water management systems, the salmon and killer whales might be next to go, hurting the fishing industries in the process.

At the end of the day, the delta smelt are just the harbinger, signaling the tipping of the delicate balance of the delta's ecosystem and the potential damage of pumping and poor water management on wildlife."

Gavin Newsom won governorship handily, ditto his re-election and the ridiculous recall effort against him (62% voted in favor of retaining him). So Californians don't have a serious problem with him governing our state. Unfortunately, he'll term out in two years.

Karen Bass (LA Mayor) happened to be in Ghana as part of a US delegation to celebrate the inauguration of their new president and to meet their first female vice president. Immediately after the broke out she returned home. immediately returned to Los Angeles.

I learned as a small child that it's always bad manners to kick people, even more so to kick them when they're down. Even when (especially when?) hiding behind "I was only joking" or "I was trying to be helpful."

The many unkind (often gleeful) remarks, criticisms, and outspoken opinions based on ignorance, I've read on SF during So Cal's suffering this month makes me rethink my participation on this forum. It's certainly lowered my opinions of folks I'd previously believed to be the kind and compassionate type of people I'd normally call friends.

OH PLEASE...

to go along with what StarSong wrote above,
the governor had the guts to stand up to the bullcrap, the state was not run dry, and the smelt are under FEDERAL protection
Don't believe everything on Fox News...

California is a huge state. Blistering deserts, one of the largest mountain ranges in the US, eight hundred miles of beaches, etc. Southern, Northern, but within each region countless sub-regions. I was born here, and with the exception of five years in the Navy I have spent my life here and with the exception of this forum have never heard it suggested that California be divided into two or more states. Leave it as is.

I was offering to Rename Death Valley, pretty much everything East say 70 miles of LA / San Diago except for military bases
To Irrigated Desert National Park to get great Federal Management. My memory of most of it in the early 70's
was like my worst nightmare. 111 Degrees hell, early Sept. Its mostly Joshua Tree / national park now. ... ...
Look sort of like desert stuff growing.

Not redraw state border lines, just make the place one large national park. The Alpine Visitor lodges and Rental Camper sites
would be easier to empty when the fires erupt.. It could be a Retirees retirement paradise occasionally, especially winters.
I remember Gene Autry, Happy Trails to You!

The only bother Californians have is out-of-state critics reciting politically motivated half-truths and distortions.

Don't worry. I believe Southern California will be fully restored under new leadership in no time, houses rebuilt, vegetation restored, all except memories and lost lives. That's the hardest part. Restoration may even be more beautiful and more stable than ever. Gavin Newsome and the Mayor must go but Californians will be there for one another as will many all over America. I used to live in Southern California for 12 years. The people are awesome.

PS...I think Papa Tiger was just joking
Yea, the only reason for your negative comments about Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom is that they have a (D) instead of an (R), which makes this sound oh-so-political.

I lived 20 years in So Cal and 20 years in Nor Cal before moving to Oregon, so I feel qualified to speak on this subject. ... My brother and I inherited an island located near Stockton (right in the middle of the "delta" and I fished there throughout my childhood. I witnessed the depredation of the San Joaquine river water quality from when it was suitable for salmon to now when it is unsafe to drink.

The degradation was caused by diverting water to both SoCal (for people) AND to Nor Cal (for large scale farming). Vast amounts of water are needed to raise almonds and row crops.
There simply is not enough water , regardless of what additional dams are built., to satisfy both So Cal people and Nor Cal farmers...let alone environmentalists who want to limit both groups isage.

The Cal. Gov. just got a near $$$ Mansion across the bay to the north of Oakland, Cal.

My plans for Cal. are Nada !

Monterey refused a Sea Water reclaim plant Via American Water. It is trying to deal with the sticky stuff too.

You happen to be wrong Nathan....your just another nasty hater of me because of my Christian faith and politics and because I happen to know a lot about both. You don't know me. My first husband JUST lost his home in Pacific Palisades. I lived in LA for a year in Hollywood as an artist, then moved further south to Cardiff-by-the-Sea near LaJolla and San Diego with my new husband and started my business there plus I did all the advertising for my husband's business that grew nationwide.

We later moved to Leucadia and we bought an investment property in Olivenhain where I was required by California Law to clear vegetation to create a FIRE barrier around the whole property...we never had a fire the whole time we lived there. I heard that the current governor did not stay on top of that law regarding the barrier to be maintained around anyones property.

I said earlier I lived in CA 12 years but actually I was married 12 years until my husband died suddenly during a tennis tournament and then I stayed another 2 years raising my 4 children ages 1-2-4-6 alone. The people there were amazing and I have many friends there I keep in touch with. So I'm no Out-of-State Critic as you say. I eventually moved to the east coast to be near my family.

Cant speak for Nathan - but I suspect, like most people including me , he doesnt hate anyone for their Christian or any other faith - how they use and post about that faith is sometimes the issue.
Calling people nasty haters isnt a great Christian atitude .

and you do know politics are banned on this forum? - nobody should be hating you for your politics because you shouldn't be posting in a way that reveals what they are.

@Lara, at the risk of making this into a public spectacle I shall set the record straight. You are wrong, I don't hate you in the slightest, certainly not because of your being a Christian, although I must say- your holier-than-thou attitude is a constant source of annoyance, not just for me, but for a lot of people.
You slip in your political comments like they are "gospel", not caring that such comments are a slap in the face to those who may not share your beliefs. You don't live here, you are an outsider. If someone were to want to serve you the same dish that you freely dish out, it wouldn't be too hard to find fault with the state you call home. You're evidently not familiar with the "treat others as you would like to be treated" saying.
