Meta cuts 5% of jobs to lose 'lowest performers'.

Meta has more than 72,000 employees, worldwide! Damn!

According to an article I read, some of the eliminated workers will be replaced by AI.

Zuckerberg and others are expecting that many mid level programmers will be replaced by AI. All software companies will be leveraging what AI can do.

Why not? Considering that's what good performance means: showing up and being able to do the job with productivity.

Honestly? It suggests there is some uniform measure all employees are held to. That's more than 67,000 people working in different countries. Then you have the radically different types of departments, requirements, and employment laws. Frankly, the very idea that they were all "under-performing" is ridiculous, and facile.
