Referring to the bathroom grates to some degree, I have lived in a few houses which had separate bathrooms to their lavatory, toilet, loo or dunny. Some even had outdoor funnies.
I don't know. I'm an American.American thing, I think.
I watched a YouTube ( yes I know, it was just one person's opinion but it was a well known travel guide) aimed at Australians travelling to US.
And the polite thing to ask , if in a restaurant or suchlike, was 'where are the bathrooms or the restrooms?' The word toilet was a bit vulgar or uncouth.
Whereas in Australia in the same situation, ' where are the toilets?' Is perfectly normal and acceptable.

I don't know. I'm an American.
For me, 'restroom' is a euphemism. In life I try not to use them.
In America, the French 'la toilette' has lost its original meaning. To me, 'toilet' means the pot.
Just as you said, I always ask for the bathroom. They know what I mean.
I hate to say this but I have known a couple of people that would probably be able to sit comfortably on that completely...
Thanks for sharing this!I absolutely hate those automatic flushers. Too often, they flush too soon, which is not sanitary.
After I accepted Islam, which is more than a religion, but a way of life, I was taught that we should always close the lid before flushing. That was more than 25 years ago. Just a few years ago, I started seeing articles about how that should be done because toilet germs can spew out as far as six feet when flushed. Imagine some people have their toothbrushes exposed within that range. Yuk!We started putting our toothbrushes inside the medicine cabinet decades ago.
Another thing I was taught is that we Muslims should wipe with wet tissue before using the dry. Also that it's best for men to sit while urinating. This is supposed to be better for the prostate. I've since seen non Islamic literature that supports that. Here is one of the articles:
Should Men Sit When They Pee? 4 Benefits of Sitting Down
I always got a kick out of that too... Eau des toilettes. As a child. I flipped out the first time I saw the words "toilet water" on a small bottle of scent.
You're welcome, of course Doug. Thanks for sharing this!
