Ssa.gov login in woes, here we go again!

No problem for me using the Login.gov. Quick and easy.
I did download my last statement because I fear I may not be able to access the site sometime in the near future.

Bingo! Thanks @Naturally, I did see something yesterday about 'credit freezes', but didn't quite see WHY that would apply. But yea, I've got our credit locked down, so I'll have to approach solving this from that perspective. (y)
 
Working with Social Security in and of itself is a joke. When my mother moved from her home to assisted living and her address changed I went into the Social Security office, complete with paperwork showing I had Power of Attorney over her affairs. They told me that they didn't accept Power of Attorney and I would have to bring her into the office in person. She was in a wheelchair! I was always in fear that her bank account routing would change and she would no longer receive her checks.

Yet, when I called them with her on the phone they accepted the change. They asked her a few qualifying questions, but in reality she could have been anyone. :oops:

My cousin set up an online account for her when she was living with her. She then forgot the password. Need I say anything else!

OMG, some Gov't websites are such a $h!tshow, here in CA the flipp'n Franchise Tax Board is such a miserable, spiteful, dysfunctional website! When I was treasurer of our incorporated fitness company I did the taxes, needed to use FTB but if you even looked at your monitor funny your account would be locked, and you'd have to get a new temp password in the mail, which took 30 days. Not a great option at tax time. :rolleyes:
 
I guess it kind of makes sense that you can't create a SSA account if you have a credit freeze. I mean, if you locked credit out of concern for social security number integrity, then maybe the SSA might be a little cautious handing out accounts based on that social security number.

Not only that, but SSA may not even have access to your credit bureau account in order to verify information requested in order to establish a SSA account. Maybe I'm overthinking it but it does make sense I suppose.

Luckily, I'd already established a SSA account years before I locked down my credit or would have run into the same issues.
 
Go on down to your local big city SSA office and speak to your agent.
Take your paperwork and stuff wid you. Sure, that was easy. Every Co.
Has a SSA office near to it! Sure, The Donald / Elon will Close them up?
 
I am also having problems logging into my Login.gov account. SSA wants me to take a photo of my driver's license and send it to them or I can go to the Post Office and go through some rigimarole there. Ya I'm gonna do that. Honestly, the problems I'm having are the same as what I had trying to log into my Verizon account a while ago. Ended up texting back and forth with some hacker dude.
 
I successfully logged in to my S.S. account, I used my username and password that I originally set up the account with...no problem. Of course they want me to set up an Login.gov login, which I'll do, when username & password logins no longer work. Still no luck with wife's account.
I will call S.S. again Monday and try getting this resolved over the phone. If that fails, then the last resort will be a visit to their office. :rolleyes:

Once I got my login.gov set up, I've had no problem logging into my SS account. I'm sorry you've had these frustrating, time consuming issues Nathan. I hope the issue gets solved soon with relatively little pain.
 
I have to mention something similar. I received Unemployment payments (with the spiff for Covid) when my position was eliminated in June 2020. After many months of payments, Unemployment tried to claw them back due to so many gaming the system.

I ended up doing a Zoom call with a representative and showing her my driver's license, Social Security info and my passport. She sent me a link to a site to fill out a form. Well, wouldn't you know my passport was about to expire so I renewed it. I did a follow up Zoom call where the representative said that my passport information no longer matched and I needed to go back to the link and fill it out again. It didn't work because she hadn't updated the link. Anyway, the whole thing was a nightmare that I was glad to get beyond.
 
I had similar log in problems today. The account I've had for years seems to have been deleted. So I had to make a new one to do my son's payee accounting report. When I finally go it, it wouldn't let me do it. It said the money had to add up to the amount they said was paid, not all of which was paid to me. Thus the total was off by $3,100. So I have to call the local office tomorrow and make an appointment to try and get that sorted. I can't mail in the form they sent me because I've scribbled notes all over it.

At least the local SSA people are nice people. I've talked a few real schmucks in other offices. For example, Eureka, population 26,000, the SSA people are nice and helpful. In Fort Collins, Colorado, population 170,000, the SSA people are rude and not very helpful at all. And here, the nearest office is in Bakersfield, population 411,000, and you would think, big city, a lot of people with attitudes, etc, but that's not the case here.

People here are much friendlier than about half of the people up in Eureka. The SSA people are nice to the point of kindness, very helpful, and they go out of their way to help you. That shocked the stuffin' out of me...

Yea, you never know, however the last time we had to go to SSA the place was crowded but orderly, and the staff friendly and willing to help.

Lol, nobody will believe me, but the last time I went to the DMV it wasn't the usual nightmare, and everything actually went smooth. :unsure:

Exactly my situation, too. I logged in on the SS website without issue, though they desperately tried to get me to log in using ID.me or login.gov (I could, since I have wrestled both of those things in the past, but if there's an option not to...). I looked up my "preferences" and sure enough, I had opted for "paperless" documents. Though I don't remember doing that at all.

I changed it back -- I definitely want a mailed SSA 1099. But I downloaded my 2024 1099, which is all I needed to file my return.

The N.J. DMV now requires that people make appointments, but my I think my son did do a walk in a couple of weeks ago. Are appointments necessary where you are?

I meant to ask are they required? N.J.DMV makes it seem like you have to make an appointment. Right now their website says Real ID license appointments are almost filled up and most of the offices no longer have appointments available, including the ones closest to us. I didn't opt for Real ID because I have a passport book and card. Do you need Real ID in your state?

The call to make an appointment with the SSA was great, but I had a feeling it might be after having been to that office a few times. When I said I was glad I could call them directly, the woman I was talking to laughed and said "You would need a great deal of patience to call the main SSA 800 number." I found that particularly amusing.

However, she said I didn't need to make an appointment, that she could mail me a new copy of the form I need to file out, and she said she would send a note to the people in charge of maintaining the ssa.gov website and tell them that the form I was trying to fill out needs fixing. I laughed at that and said "Tech support? Oh I'm sure they'll have that fixed right away..." She said "I know. That's why I'm going to mail you a new form. They'll fix it, but will any of us still be here by then?"

So I told her Thank You for making me feel better. I was seriously thinking I was going to end up in serious hot water with the SSA, because that form said it was due last September 30th. I just got it a week ago and it said I had 30 days to get it done. She said she was putting a note in my son's file about my having problems, and that I didn't need to worry about going to Club Fed. A phrase I haven't heard in decades. She was very nice and said she remembered talking to us once in the office.

I miss Eureka sometimes, mostly the beach, but I don't very many of the people. And I still find it hard to believe we actually like living in SoCal, specially in a city of 411,000. But I still need to deal with DMV...

I requested a temp password but still couldn't figure it out from the updated letter - gave up. It took longer than the 8-10 days they said it would. My wife got her 1099 but nothing for me. Haven't got the time or energy to go to the SSA local office for help, manpower issues. Actually only need the total paid out, the medicare info & the final total.

You don't need the 1099 to file, just the figures. If I'm short I'm sure they'll (IRS) let me know, and sent me the correct numbers along with the updated remittance or correction. I always owe anyway.

That's what I thought too, but the last time we went through this our tax preparer insisted that we did in fact need to have a copy.
