Seniors who seek employment

Is there a section designated yet for seniors seeking employment? I know that many of us still need to work to pay our basic living expenses. If you are between the ages of 50 and 64 years of age this can be particularly challenging because we don’t qualify for social security retirement payments yet. Age discrimination in the workforce is an issue as well.

No, there is no section here for employment.... the nearest would be in the retirement section here...

Retirement Living

In the UK the age for retirement is 66, and as from 2026 will increase to 67, by the time our kids reach retiremenet age I firmly believe there will be no cut off age.. and they'll have to work until they physically can't..

Interesting, recently I have been reading about some companies firing younger workers and calling back some their older more reliable former employees.
I wish that happened here. It's much cheaper for employers to use younger workers....

here minimum wage is set to increase in April 2025. The new rates will be:

  • £12.21 per hour for workers aged 21 and over
  • £10.00 per hour for workers aged 18 to 20
  • £7.55 per hour for workers aged 16 to 17 and apprentices

Age discrimination is not something that I have encountered. The company that I work for call me in on an, as and when basis. Often it's to cover someone who has called in sick, it can be to cover someone's annual leave or it is just a flood of work where they need all hands on deck.

After graduating in business studies I went on to run distribution depots. Those large warehouses that trucks run out of when they take a replenishment load to the supermarket. My particular field was the overnight small parcel market. Overnight simply means, collect one day, deliver the next.

The company where I work now found out, by a chance remark that I made, that I have the appropriate licence to drive those large trucks. Back when I was a student, money was so tight that I might not have been able to complete the course. With help from my Dad, I trained at driving those trucks, got the appropriate licence and worked on a staff agency at weekends. That earned me enough to complete my studies.

Having found out about my licence they have me run the trucks to and from the workshops where they are inspected, serviced and repaired. I get to play truckers every now and then. I probably work about fifteen to twenty hours a week, sometimes I go days without going to work and other times I am in every day. It's like part-time retirement. Did I say my age? I'm 80 next year. I take the view that President Biden was 82 when he left office.

Michael Caine was 90 when he starred in: The Great Escaper. An engaging exploration of love, loss, memory and trauma. The film tells the real story of Royal Navy veteran, Bernard Jordan, who “escaped” from his care home in June 2014 to attend the 70th anniversary of D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

Well, here in the U.S. a lot companies are finding out some their college graduate employees are very under qualified, entitled and spoiled and tossing them out.

yes many of them can be described as such here too.... I wish employers would do a turnaround and start employing older folks....

The odd budget supermarket does, but on the whole Older people are like burning embers barely any employer will touch us despite our qualifications

You can't compare Film stars to the man on the street when it comes to working into old age.....not that the 2 are different in their work ethic but film stars get to work a few minutes at a time as older people.. they get rested, they get fed, they get pampered... very different to Joe Blogs

Yes, we are still sharp mentally as we are constantly learning and some still physically fit. When I first retired at 55 I was getting quite a few call backs. However at only 67, not so much anymore.

Point taken, you might find this feature in The Super Ageing News of interest.

Ageism is very much an issue in the workplace - obviously not everywhere but it certainly is an obstacle for many people looking to work in their later years.

You are very fortunate that you have your health, enjoy the work you do and that they respect you and your skills. I too was fortunate and would have still been working, albeit probably part-time, if the company I worked for had not folded during Covid.

My only real insight into job-hunting in today's market is through my ex-colleagues and, to be honest, I thank my lucky stars that I do not have to go through the endless job applications, interviews (mainly by Zoom) and rejection that they have experienced. Opportunities are scarce for many people who wish or need to work later in life, especially part-time.

I think it's great that you @horseless carriage are able to work part-time and enjoy it. I have a neighbour who is also in his 80's, loves his job and has no plans to slow down any time soon. :)

It’s bizarre how badly we can be treated simply for being older, without employers even knowing us and the many skills that we still possess. Sometimes it seems like a type of genocide. I will be moving soon to an area that I hope will have more employment opportunities for people my age and older. I’m in my mid fifties and I believe that I can still contribute in meaningful ways.

No truck driving for me because I don’t see well at night. Also, I have 2 dogs that depend on me. At my age, I’m no longer looking for a career. I’m searching for a job that won’t destroy my body and has fair pay.

It is, especially as one day, if they are lucky, they will be older too!

Mid-fifties is not old though, I hope you find a job which will suit you. Now that more employees are having to return to the work place, things might be better. 🤞

I want to work too! That is the crazy thing about it. If I’m unable to find fair employment after my move, I suppose I’ll need to find an attorney. I keep receiving ads for employer dating services which is disturbing. No one should be hired based on their dating status.

Yuck! That is truly revolting to me.

I do believe that the older and the disabled communities are being targeted. I’m not sure yet how to fight the discrimination. Just taking it a day at a time.

There are jobs at CVS , Walgreens pretty much any supermarket be it cashier , etc .

Look at hotels and pretty much any mall / shopping center .

Ads are a waste of time , go in person if you can if not call .

I'm close to 73 tired of redundant local plumbing jobs and want some action and looking at the CIA .

I got this off CVS site and in my area they hire seniors , I was offered a job there .

I'm physically hideous , uneducated , caustic and fairly vile so sky is the limit for you but key is to interact / get out there , meet people .

Some kid in high school told me that James Bond dies at the end of every novel. That got me curious since we had about 6 or 7 bond novels in the house. So I checked the end chapter of every one and there was one where he was poisoned and crashed to the floor. From Russia With Love.

So that was the first Bond novel I ever read. Great book! Bond isn't introduced into the story until about half way into the novel. The first half is about the Russians. The fight scene between Bond and the Russian killer is awesome. Sure enough he gets poisoned in the end by the Klebb woman and falls to the floor. The End.
