Can we talk about Germany's election?

My heart broke when those two red haired Israeli toddlers were murdered. Is this thread the place for that? For all non US related stories, BUT
let's face it, most stories we would discuss borders on the politics of the United States, which I have made a Sacred Vow not to talk about.
Mine too, how could anyone murder babies?

Uh oh, my maternal grandparents emigrated from Germany 1800 or 1900 something, (farmers),my Swedish paternal grandparents--I don't know. Neither they nor my mother brought up politics. But I remember hearing on the radio, when I was 8-9, news about rifles and bombings and I became afraid. It took me some time before I stopped becoming fearful every time I heard a plane fly overheard our house.

Allow me to add that God forbid you confuse tourists from the UK with tourists from Australia or vice versa as to us Yanks the accent is similar so tell your friends to calm down when some guy in Miami who laughs at his own jokes confuses your accent in a supermarket .

It seems like it will be another collision, typical of German politics, with exit poles so far saying:

CDU-CSU 29%
AfD 19.6%
SPD 16%
Greens 13.3%
FDP 4.9%
BSW 4.7%
Others 3.9%

With no one wanting to form a coalition with AfD, will it be left for CDU-CSU, SPD, and Greens to get together, or will the CDU-CSU go with more of the lesser parties? How has it worked out in the past

lol.... Australian and British accents are not the same or even similar, altho' our words and slang are very similar ....... British accents themselves are very different from each other depending on where in the UK

It's like confusing American with Canadian, there's a distinct difference....

Oh boy see what I mean .

you say that but try telling a Canadian that they're American, you'll get the same reaction
I meet a lot of tourists at the supermarket and start in with the same line '' Excuse me I could not help noticing your accent are you on vacation from ---- and then I entertain them with some comedy as we wait on cashier line .

However if I get the country wrong some get offended but regardless once the comedy is unleashed I have made a friend .

No Politics should mean NO POLITICS. The idea that this is a US Forum and has different rules for US Issues baffles me.

Maybe there should be a separate forum section for Politics that members have to subscribe to. It'd be easier to ignore.
Bizarre isn't it.

But I suppose the rule seems to be based in practicality and harmony rather than principle. And I believe it is partly what people of this forum had asked for. Maybe other nations can be partly trusted to keep things civil.

It can be challenging tailoring a rule to avoid the most likely sources of conflict, without frustrating others where there is no or significantly less emotional investment in political rhetoric.

It's considerably less of a cess pool than one or two of the supposed super powers.
I'd be vaguely interested to learn how we stack up against the Euro's and the Brits.
Donald Horne summed Australia up when he wrote that Australia is "The Lucky Country".

Horne's intent in writing the book was to portray Australia's climb to power and wealth based almost entirely on luck rather than the strength of its political or economic system, which Horne believed was "second rate".

Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people's ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise.
Horne's statement was an indictment of 1960s Australia and it is still relevant in the 21st century.

Genius. When Hubby and I were driving around in US we were often mistaken as English. Never bothered me at all. It was a conversation starter.

Plus..plus... you have so much more space......and your medical services are not affected by immigrants...
As far as space, they go to the cities where they can get services & housing. Smaller towns have limited areas to live.

The medical services are being affected. People in smaller towns have had a hard time getting in to be treated for real emergencies because it's being used like a doctors office for non-emergencies. One town (last thread on it was shut down so I won't name it) had trailers brought in by the state to try to relieve & keep the non-ER cases from going to the Emergency Room.

If this happens in smaller communities, I would think the larger cities like New York have the same issues.

think about this... the UK has almost 70 million people.... and that's what we know... there is without doubt many more we don't know of.... and the uk is smaller than Oregon... with a massive shortage of Doctors, and hospitals....
