Is it Barbecue or Sloppy Joe?

Mom always called it barbecue,
So that's what I call it.

When she said,
"I made barbecue",
We all knew what she meant.

I'm surprised so many call it sloppy Joe.

Damn, I'm hungry...
Mom's was delicious.
A big sesame seed bun,
Look out...
A picture or description of what you’re thinking would have been helpful.
There’s bbq beef burgers, steak, chicken …..
Anything cooked on the bbq is considered bbq

Since you did mention sloppy Joe, I presume you meant this. It’s not necessary bbq’ed.

so we are talking about cooked mince meat (what you call ground beef, I think?) in a hamburger bun?

Ive never seen anyone do that here s o I don't know what I would call it.

A BBQ to me is the outside cooking thing you cook meat and sometimes onion rings, sliced potato etc on - or going to a BBQ means going to someone's house or a park where you will do that. or BBQ'd meat is meat cooked on it.

Sloppy Joe isnt a term used much here either - but we have all heard of it as a clothing item - what we would call a windcheater here.

Don't care what you call 'em, whip up a batch and I'll be right over.

The other ongoing debate is goulash vs Johnny Marzetti. If you grew up in Central Ohio, it's Johnny Marzetti.

Now I'm hungry
I had a friend somewhat hesitate to accept a dinner invitation for goulash. He licked the plate clean. What is Johnny Market to please?

When I was young my mother would make sloppy joes with hamburger meat in a tomato-based sauce. I don't remember any ting else that she barbecued other than chicken. But SJ's were made on the stove or slow cooker.

Down south here, a BBQ sandwich is typically pulled pork... in a tomato-based sauce w/brown sugar (or some other sweetened something), but also other sauces as well. BBQ is done in a smoker or grill... open flame.

Not the best picture but close.

Mom would get 80/20(?) Ground Chuck
Dice a little onion
A sauce that was on the tomato side
Put her flavors in there...

Sometimes I'd eat it straight
No bun.

Hold it here - there is always White Sauce.

Mom made her chili on the Italian side, too.
Small bits of diced tomato.
Mom's chili was more red than other chili I've seen
Other chili looks brown to me.

Yeah, I made a big mistake by dialing into this thread without having had supper. I'm hungry, but fuggedaboudit. It's too damned late.

But now that I'm here, let me introduce a killer bbq beef (shredded beef) that will surely pique your tastebuds.

Mom's Dinner

Easy, fairly quick, and really delicious. Of course you have to pony up your 2nd mortgage to buy even chuck roast (do up a big one in a dutch oven for maximum impact), but if you like beef -- I do -- ya gotta do whatcha gotta do.

We called it Sloppy Joe's when I was a kid. I never make it now but should. I like them
