A question about walkers....

Next month, my Mom will be 93 years old. It's no secret that I think she is amazing....lives by herself, cooks, cleans, does laundry, and even drives!

For the most part, she is still walking pretty good, too! Once in a while her knees will bother her, so she keeps a cane by the door. Since she hardly ever needs it, I have never actually seen her use her cane.

Recently, her knees are getting more painful, and there are times when I think a walker would be handy. My Dad had a really nice walker that he got for free, from Hospice. The other day, I went looking for it, and I couldn't find it anywhere!

I know that she can get a used walker for free from the VFW or from the Salvation Army, but I think her insurance would cover a nice new one.

I have no idea how to go about getting this for her. Do I need to get something from her doctor? There are several medical supply stores in town that we could go to, but I want to make sure that it is covered by her insurance.

HERE IS MY QUESTION:
Can anyone tell me where to start, to get a walker for my Mom?

I've got my answer....please disregard this thread.
I ā€˜think’ you can delete the whole thread if you want to. Just use the edit feature and hit delete.

I’m not sure if you can delete an entire thread once you have others join it but if you want to delete a post you click on those 3 dots just right of the report bottom. A box will open up showing an edit or delete option. Click delete. Once you do this a box will show up asking why you are deleting your post. That’s not compulsory, you can skip that if you want.i always add a reason. That’s it. Your post will be gone. I’m on an iPhone. Your way might be down different. If you are using a computer it might delete a difffent .way but I hope this is helpful.

I'm on a tablet, I don't have the 3 dots on my post.

To the left, I have two options: Report or Edit. Eventually, the Edit button goes away.

Sometimes, I will hit Edit, take away my text, add a period, hit Save. The post is still there, but what I originally wrote is gone.

I guess I'll just settle for that method. I've enjoyed this conversation with you, so I'm not going to delete this one. šŸ™ƒ

Edit is better than nothing. Good for you. You figured it out.

I think you should leave this thread for others who may have this question. Maybe you could tell us what you found about insurance covering a walker. I know for me, I bought my walkers myself so don't know much about that but would like to know.

Walkers are perplexing! Don’t get a cheap one! I bought mine on my own.

A couple years ago, I thought what is the big deal …. I ordered one on Amazon.

When I actually decided to use it, I found out why it was cheap. …. oh, my aching back ~ and the noisy wheels/tires.

I then decided to pay attention to what people were sayimg and using. … I got an UPRIGHT walker, that makes me stand up straight -what a difference!
Also QUIET tires….
You get what you pay for ...

Well darn. I wanted to vent on how I ended up with a second walker I didn't need.....I'd been checked over in the ER room, (with daughter in room) found to be fine, but at home I needed to use my walker for balance. Physical therapist jumped on that fact and kept trying to convince me to accept a walker he had there. I said no, I don't need it, but my daughter said take it, it's free. I said so what, I don't need it. I finally got so tired of arguing over it I said okay. It now stands in my living room as a handy blanket holder next to my recliner.

My close friend, just got a new walker to replace an old one. It was covered by insurance. But I don't know if that means Medicare, a Medicare supplement, or a combination of the two. I think the medical supply company would know, but after talking to them, I would check with your insurance carriers.

My first one was a gift and the 2nd one I bought for back up. Rollator. Did not cost a lot. I love the first one better even though the 2nd one is the same model but with upgrades from being newer. I would use it for shopping and errands whether I needed it or not. Makes life easy. Getting ready to take out today to an appointment 2 blocks away in the snow. If I didn't have it I would not be able to do this on my own. It gives me independence.

I realize that insurance varies, that's why I was looking to find out where to start.

This is the link that someone on my other forum posted for me....

This is from the Medicare site...
Walkers

This was another post I received....
Getting a walker

All my questions were answered in these two links.
