Do gardens make more sense than lawns?

I like caring for my lawn, but get a bit tired of it by August. Gardens and flowers have little interest for me. Non flowering shrubs that are green all year are a nice accent.

Almost the same at my home in Florida. I put a shovel into the ground and come out with a shovel-full of sand. It’s hard enough down there to grow grass, so I put in turf. We live in a mobile home park and own a double wide with 1450 square feet. It cost a small fortune to have the turf laid, but no more worries about mowing or watering, which each lot owner is responsible for.

We bought the home a few years ago after being talked into buying a home in Florida and have been talking about selling it ever since. I wouldn’t say it was a mistake, but we only use it a few months out of the year. We do enjoy the beaches and water, but that’s about it. We hit all of the tourist attractions.
As you know Florida is no longer the number one retirement state , think it is now either Georgia or one of the Carolinas .

I'm in Miami and Miamians my age are moving out of Miami to Florida lol and Floridians my age are moving out of state .

It is not a bad state at all in any way but I have become a nervous Nellie and I know a monster hurricane is coming my way which will directly sit over my house so hopefully stop procrastinating and sell but have not made up my mind what state yet .

My son has become interested in gardening and we will be doing that together this season, planting some veggies, squashes, melons, herbs and peppers. Oh, and sunflowers! Always, sunflowers. 🌻 🤗
Horrible luck other then red , orange colors is what have had with sunflowers .

I ordered seeds from those giant type sunflowers , think called Russian mammoths from several places but only one germinated .

Sunflowers are great to attract hummingbirds and butterfly's which love .

Sorry for your back luck with these lovely flowers; hopefully you get some in seasons to come. :)

Do you plant yours or you do that scientific method of getting them to first sprout in a tray ?

I have simply planted them .
The sunflowers I plant from seeds, sometimes directly in the ground and others in tiny start pots. I've had success both ways. :)
