Yes, it has been dead for the most part for some time. And this is a tragedy as the working middle class pretty much died with it. Surely you mourn with me on the day dedicated to this movement...

Funny,I've worked in a few unions and non union shops most of my working life and Ill still choose non unions. Less corruptions that way.
 
I worked in both shops also. Never did I see any union corruption. I did see plenty of illegal or unethical acts by corporations or management thwarted by the union presence. The union ones folks were happy and contented that they did not have to deal with capricious nonsense just because a foreman was having a bad day. I
 
I never saw any union corruption either, but as Robusta said, plenty of illegal and unethical acts by management which came to light and were halted thanks to the union.
 
I too have worked in both union and non union jobs. I ended up preferring the non union work places.

Mostly for one reason in the union shops. I had to please the union plus my employer and did not like the second boss between me and my employer. Tired of a certain job, you had two masters to please. In a non union shop I could just walk up to my employers management and talk over what I would like to do. If possible it happened with no problems. In a union job I had to ask my trade union, basic labor, machinist, whatever, and convince them I really did want to move and then he would go talk to the newer job union and see about moving. Just a whole lot more difficult. I suppose my union hated to see my contribution go away for one.

Certainly appears that way, the middle working class in America is becoming poor, and the politicians on the right don't really seem to care as long as their bank accounts and retirements are financially secure.
 
Most union corruption probably occurs at the top or national level of many unions. Local shops and reps usually do a pretty good job of representing their members. Don't forget there different types of unions as well which makes matters worse than they seem. A bargaining unit might not have has much influence as a shop union. A bargaining unit simply represents the employees at that company/location while the shop unions provide trained labor to a company.

I think unions failed to address many issues at the national strategy level. They work at trying to keep their members employed which is hard but when I see unions don't want to let their members take national certification tests/programs that would help their members find employment else where, not just at the company or local that is not good for the members. I've seen unions alienate potential jobs/members out of fear for their jobs. A lot of union members despise the various contractors these companies use for what ever looking at them with an evil eye instead they should be trying to recruit them rather than look at them as someone who might take their job one day.

The air traffic controller strike in the early 80s was basically the final death knell when they got fired. Throw in the cheap Japanese imports flowing into the country at the same time manufacturing unions and companies lost out. Lots of other issues but those two loosing battles killed unions in America.

There is nothing biased about her post but by Gawd YOURS is!!! There is one candidate for President on the GOP who proudly brags about breaking the public service unions in his state as governor, Scott Walker. I happily worked in a UNION shop as a young man and it was the best thing since sliced bread.

No.. Not when the GOP is destroying the country and the Middle Class... NO... I will CONTINUE to call attention to it.. If you don't like it... well.. you know what to do.. don't you..

Lon, when you post here or on any open message board you are posting to us all, the fact that you chose to direct a comment to one member in no way diminishes the rights of others to also comment. It would probably be your desire to post without any other opinion, but it ain't gonna happen.

A union and union benefits kept me alive as a kid.. Dad was a roofer and was in the Roofer's Union local #11. Had decent food, clothing and medical care because of it..

I'd love to have a union. It can be lonely and scary out there in the working world.
