What Are You Passionate About?

Someone on another thread gave the very good advice, "Find your passion," when begs the question: What is your passion?

I am deeply interested in a few things, but my passion, the thing that takes me out of myself and refocuses all my energies, is horses, the company of horses and caring for them. Unfortunately, we don't have a car at present so I can't get to the farm to volunteer.

We'll be getting a car later this year, though, and I do plan on going back then. Really looking forward to that.

I think if I could simply, "make it so," my life would be that of a horse-care-taking Virologist.

Yes ma’am!!!!! This ^^^. Horses are a born-in-the-blood addiction for me.

I am not Amish but we farmed with horses until I was four and the mare passed in 1951.. My step granddad raised Welsh/Morgans. He was the Pegasus Wings Be earth My Feet. - giving me the best horse foundation a kid could want.

I will be 78 this month and I’ve been paying for my own since I was 12. I have laid seven horses to rest in my life, six of them being 27-31 years. I am down to my last horse who was gifted to me when one of my Walking Horses passed and the other one needed a friend. Now that other TWH has passed, the “companion” horse (who is 29-31 years) has a friend who is ON LOAN. A 13 yr old Arab who will go home because I am too old to own more horses and I wish that weren’t so.

In my lifetime, I have spent more than one night on a lounge chair in the barn wrapped in a blanket with a sick horse.

I admire their beauty but afraid of horses as a kick , etc .

I imagine tremendous work , expense ?

One of my daughters neighbors in Ca has 3 dwarf horses or dwarf pony but pets not riding horses and one time I was there the neighbor invited me over but did not want to risk it , lol.

Kindred spirits in our love of these magical, ethereal creatures. I am happiest, most at peace, when walking beside, caring for or talking to a horse. ❤️

Yes a lot of work but it’s work we addicts don’t mind. Horses didn’t used to be expensive, unless they were in training for a specific career. These days, I have to say my horse and the loaner horse cost as much as my second group of four Keepers cost me. The price of everything has gone up so much, but they are how I choose to spend my money.

Amen😇.

There is nothing better than sitting on a bale of hay at night and listening to horses quietly munch away on their hay. Even better is when one of them blows softly in your ear🥰🥰

Do you ride them ?

I ask as know some keep them but not for riding .

Btw , in another post you said you sleep in shifts to hear your horses / dogs and yes my memory is creepy but can not find that post .

Either way the dogs sleep with the horses like in barn to look after them ?

Between dogs, (which I also love), reading, the NYT crossword and walking, it seems you are taking good care of your heart, mind and body. :)

Food is something I'm quite passionate about. I'm interested in food history, including how it's raised and cultivated, as well as how it's prepared and consumed. It's one of the pleasures of my life.

@Medusa - Just want to say, you have been very thoughtful in following up and responding to members who posted to your thread. We don't always see that. Thanks.
She's a sweetheart! ❤️

I was a die hard trail rider — “going where no man has ever gone before”, lollol I had to give up riding in 2012. I have slid down my share of riverbanks, swam across, and dug up the other side.

If the photo posted (I have been having trouble with photos posting) This was pretty much my last ride on one of my Walking Horses in 2012. Even on rough rides, I rarely used a saddle. I laid this fella to rest in my Pet Sematary last December. He almost made it to 31 and had been with me since he was 2-1/2. I keep the horses out of the main pasture at night. They have about 3-1/2 to 4 acres attached to the barn for night grazing. If they start running like fools I hear them and can put a spotlight on them to see what’s up.

The dogs: They stay in the house and have ~1\4 acre back yard. One is a Blue Pitbull who was a rescue from a backyard puppy factory. She was still a pup herself when she started having babies.

The other one is a Catahoula/Pitbull cross who has been with me 12 of his 13 years. He is also a rescue. They are my avatar.

I've always wondered why you don't have a dog of your own Sue ?..especially as you love to walk as well

Thank you, Bella. You made me smile on a tough day. ❤️

Food history sounds really interesting, to trace the lineage (right word?) of a specific food or dish. I imagine a person could learn a lot about a lot doing that and have fun. Delicious fun. I don't think I've really considered that before, food history.

I love this picture: woman and horse.
I would love to see your dogs if you have a picture handy. We have a Boxer who lives in the house and so must be walked at least four times a day. Silly Marmaduke of a dog. ;) He makes me go outside and walk every day*, whether I want to or not. Dogs are so good for their people.

Well, not today or yesterday. My husband and son have the walks the last couple days as I'm not feeling great. Though I did accompany my son on the early evening walk in an act of defiance against my current state. Rage against the machine! Sort of.

Nice horse .

I know very little about horses but a type which is trained to walk funny ' Paso Fino ' is popular in Miami horse farms .

There are quite few breeds whose intermediate gait is not a trot and it is in their DNA.

Past Finos have a natural, inborn, 4-beat lateral gait. They don’t trot.

My Tennessee Walkers don’t trot either. They walk in their distinctive way due to a natural, inherited gait called the "running walk". This gait is characterized by a smooth, four-beat movement where the horse's hind feet stride ahead of the front feet.

I started riding Tennessee Walkers in 1990 in order to keep riding as I got to where I couldn’t sit the trot or post the trot. I was told to stop riding altogether back then. I gave the PT. my best bobbing dog head as I walked out of therapy, and went looking for a Walking Horse or a gaited Morgan, lollol

Dogs photos won’t load; I’ll have to wait until later when cyberspace isn’t so busy.

Dancing has been a lifelong pleasure, whether it's a passion or not I couldn't say. Much as I love modern dancing, that's the generic term for Latin and Ballroom, could I live without it? Certainly can. My lady's heart surgery has curtailed our dancing, but we still enjoy the socialising aspect of dance.
When younger we would rehearse and rehearse until we had a routine step and timing perfect, so you could say that was a passion. Offbeat dances were also fun, they didn't have the strict rigidity of Modern Dance. We even managed to choreograph gymnastic lifts and spins into rock & roll style jive. Such dance moves always made this kind of impression.
Today though, I just give thanks that my wife is managing to recover, albeit slowly.
Although I don't share your enthusiasm for dancing, I am glad to hear that your wife is making slow and steady progress back to good health.

Some time ago I mentioned I had a M/F Alapaha Bulldog and male was Merle this is going back to late 80s .

The breed is not AKC recognized as a mix American bulldog , Old Bulldoge and Catahoula Leopard Dog.

Have you ridden such a horse? Is it a comfortable seat?

I haven’t, but a woman on the horse forum I belong to has ridden them for years. She also has a Tennessee Walker and prefers the Paso Fino.

I have studied them and I am pretty sure my particular back issues would not tolerate their intermediate gaits for too long.

Walking Horses are dubbed “the glide ride” of the horse world and that is mostly true. While they all have a non-trotting intermediate gait, they don’t all perform the running walk.
