Kentucky Derby Next Saturday

I live about 30 minutes from where the Steeplechase is held. I have clients who attend faithfully every year, and for weeks before the event there’s so much buzz in the community, they’re securing preferred seats, outfit shopping, gathering their groups to share an exclusive tent.

For them, it’s not about the race. It’s about the prestige. Being part of an exclusive group, having the best outfit, having their hat judged the best….it’s a rich person’s event.

It’s held rain or shine. Clomping around in heels in the sticky red mud of the south isn’t my idea of fun 🤣

The Hunt Club is the most exclusive area, the one my clients want to purchase tickets to, often as a group. Here’s some info.

$343 for an exclusive viewing area including food and drink is much less than I would've guessed.

I can see people paying that for steeple chase parties. For those areas, the big steeple races are to those areas as the Derby is to Kentucky. The purses for those races can be in the 6-digits. Not as much as the big flat races, but that's still a lot of money. Those winning horses can be sought after as a stud in those racing circles.

It's been years ago, but they held steeple chases down at the Kentucky Horse Park during Rolex.

A Kentucky Hot Brown at the Kentucky Derby (and generally) is a decadent, open-faced sandwich featuring turkey, bacon, tomato, and a creamy Mornay sauce, all baked until bubbly and served hot.

It's a classic dish, often enjoyed as a late-night snack or meal, and a popular choice during Derby celebrations.

Original Hot Brown
The Kentucky Hot Brown, a beloved open-faced sandwich, originated at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky in 1926. Chef Fred K. Schmidt created the dish as a late-night option for guests who frequented the hotel's dinner dances.

My mom used to make these. Delish!

I don't follow the Derby or racing at all... but I *do* check up on Dannielynn Birkhead every year because she attends with her dad every time. She's always looked like Anna, but it's getting more and more obvious. She wore Anna's jewelry to the Derby this year.

Not a bargain and not top quality.

It was a great race and amazing in such wet slop all those horses running side by side and no accidents .

Sovereignty's jockey said exactly what he was gong to do which was hold him back till right by the finish and he did just that

It was exciting! I love it when one suddenly comes from behind at the last minute like that.

My American Promise looked like he was going to do that and then suddenly fell back.

I remember the great paternity battle over Dannilynn going on for weeks. Then one day Birkhead's picture popped up and I said, "Oh he's the father, no contest." I may not always be able to pick the horses but I can do "You are the father," better than Maury.

The King's Plate is the oldest continuously run horse race in North America. It's first race was in 1860, and it has been run every year since that date. The Kentucky Derby's first race was in 1875, 15 years after the King's Plate was first run. The title "King's or Queen's Plate " refers to who is the British Monarch at the time. The actual "Plate " is now a solid silver trophy which goes to the owner of the winning horse, each year.

The King's Plate race is reserved for three year old Canadian bred horses, over a mile and one third distance. The race is held at Toronto's Woodbine Raceway in August each year. JIM.

Sovereignty won the Belmont, beating the favorite, Journalism. There might have been a Triple Crown winner if Sovereignty had run in the Preakness.
