It is getting very hard to survive on social security with property taxes.

Our property taxes doubled since last year, from about $1000 to $2000 for an ordinary 2000 sq ft ranch.
During the 22 years while my husband was in the Air Force we lived in apartments and saved so that we could pay cash for our first and last house when we retired.

Our house wasn't an "investment" to make money, it was shelter and security for the two of us and my son. We also had what we thought was a secure amount of savings in the bank. Now with taxes doubled and grocery costs tripled, we aren't sure we'll make it until our deaths, much less for my son's.

The real estate tycoons and the big business owners are getting richer by the day while everyone else is sinking into a bare existence.

100% increase in one step seems odd. Did you go over the breakdown on the notices for both years? How is the appeal process structured in your area?

No, I haven't looked at the notices, Twostep. My husband did the taxes and mentioned it and I figured it just was what it was. I'm sure we aren't appealing.
I do know property is at a premium around here right now because a big new plant is opening in the area.

Della, depending on your personal situation such as age, handicap, ... that new plant has no bearing. Last year the county taxed us for a second lot when we were deeded a strip of common grounds.

I lived in a few areas where a new plant or business was supposed to move in and something happened. One was a minimum security prison that supposed to hire a lot of locals and didn't. They just transferred people. A couple others were plants or stores just changed their minds and left empty land. Those local communities didn't do so well.
