My Penny Loafers: Legend has it that the penny loafer was first made in the 1930s. Back then, a call on a pay phone cost 2 cents, so the point was that each shoe securely held a penny so you always had what you needed to make an emergency phone call.

Did you put pennies in your loafers?

I do believe calls were 5 cents in the 1930s, and that pennies in their loafesr were what the cool kids were doing in the 50s.
You’re right! Pay phone calls WERE 5 cents in 1930!

In the 1930s, calls were five cents; the cost of a typical local call had risen to 10 cents by the 1960s, 15 cents during the 1970s, then 25 cents in 1980’s.

Interesting story though.

The Royal Mint concurs with your story. Mind you, the UK penny is quite a size. In Brit speak two pennies was known as tupennce. Tuppence Loafers just doesn't have the same ring to it!
