What do you first notice

it it is staged or real....
i mean i have been to homes they have everything in its place and too perfect and other places whose house looks like a collection over time and not picked out of a staged catalog. I can tell a lot about who a person is by how much pretense they out on.

What it smells like as soon as I step over the threshold. Beyond that just a general sense of whether it looks like a showplace or has a more lived in appearance.

Some homes are well used…all the rooms look lived in, comfortable, like the inhabitants live well and comfortably there.

Some homes though have lovely rooms that clearly aren’t used, the functionality of the house is confined to the kitchen and perhaps a den and bedroom.

Yup, it's either a good smell, or you just want to get out of there.
Yep... and I've been to both kinds. I (or anyone) can tell if there's a smoker in the house, if there's a cat living there, if they burned last night's supper... or my favorite of all, if they rushed around cleaning because I was going to visit. Funniest one was a colleague's home when I had to stop by for some files. One step inside the door and the strong smell of furniture polish nearly knocked me over. 😁

I am very sensitive to smells, so it's the first thing I notice.. ... other than that it would be oobvious things like cleanliness, or mess.... but in reality aside from those things, I'm very unobservant where people and things are concerned.

I could be in someone;s home for hours and I wouldn't be able to tell you what colour their walls were when I came out.....because I go to visit them not to critque their house.....there's a joke in my family that says I wouldn't notice a dead body in someones house

Conversely one of my sisters, notices and is critical of EVERYTHING... ... I always wonder how she notices these things...

I like a warm welcome. I like to feel comfortable in someone's home. Here too, smell is important. No smell is the best. I do not care for air fresheners. I like a clean and orderly home as well.
PS: The first time we were invited to a party in Florida, the couple giving the party had a beautiful home on the water. They had set up a display of food on a long table.
The first thing I noticed was an enormous cockroach walking all over the food!
That was it for me, I did not want to eat, nor drink, nor touch anything, nor put my bag down anywhere, I stood there with a light smile like a statue until we could leave! I never went back there!

What do you first notice when visiting someone else's house?
Interesting question. Now I’m going to think about this when entering someone’s home for the first time.

Usually it’s the style, not that one is more right than any other. Is it relaxing?

I notice the art. Again, not right or wrong, just their taste. I’m am guilty of being fixated if something isn’t level. I even see this on tv shows.
