At least 13 dead, and many missing in TX flooding

More rain is on the radar in central Texas as search and rescue efforts enter third day

From CNN's Matt Rehbein
Rain is on track to fall on parts of central Texas throughout the day on Sunday, as rescue teams continue their desperate search for those impacted by deadly flooding over the past two days.

Radar indicates the additional rain will fall north of Kerrville, one of the hardest-hit areas in the Texas Hill Country, but that forecast could shift as the day goes on, CNN Meteorologist Chris Warren reports.

Rainfall totals generally are expected to be between 2 and 4 inches “in the highest amounts – nothing compared to what we saw in the past couple of days,” Warren said.

Texas officials have said any additional rain in already drenched areas could touch off additional flooding.

I live some 200 miles north of Kerrville, and was just as shocked as everyone else when I heard of the disaster. Weather people didn't see it coming - they predicted the rains in that area would move north, not realizing they would stall out over one area. Forecasters in my area are also missing it. They said last week that this week would be hot and dry, so I told the lawn service not to mow. But we've had rain for several days, and a lot yesterday, with more as I write this post. I see no present danger (here) of flooding, but with the bad forecasting we're getting now, who knows.

It's really sad when people start pointing fingers even before the bodies are buried.

This^^^^

I don’t think anyone could have remotely begun to prepare for a 30 foot wall of water to come rushing down the River in an hour or less. - not even the most genius of meteorologists.

I am watching The weather Channel, who is on the ground. They are giving an accounting of the horrible events.

tragically, they are fearing that some of the young women who were at camp Mystic may never be found, just as some of those in the 1987 flood, to this day, have never been found. I cannot imagine what that has to be like for their families.

Whike they are covering this nightmare in Texas, hurricane Chantal is hitting the Carolina coast. I’m sure there are those finger pointers who will be more than willing to blame the resulting damages of that on human frailty.

I think you'll find some that disagree w this statement. And your description as a "wall of water" and the time line of an hour are not accurate.

NYT- "The region has also become known as “Flash Flood Alley,” a recognition of a recurring threat that has taken lives and upended communities over the years. A propensity for high levels of rainfall combined with thin soil, exposed bedrock and steep terrain make it especially vulnerable.

“This is the most dangerous river valley in the United States,” the Kerr County judge, Rob Kelly, told reporters on Friday. “We deal with floods on a regular basis.”"

Kerr County and it's residents had no flood warning system so even the most accurate predictions could be not transmitted to the affected parties in a timely manner. The fact that it happened in the overnight hours clearly made this horrible event even worse.

I don’t see the need to split hairs on this subject, butThere are some reporters referring to thirty feet of water as “a wall of water”. What would you call it.

most reporters and meteorologist agree that 30 foot wall of water came to be in an hour to two hours depending where along the river.

This from AI:
“In Texas, particularly along the Guadalupe River, the water rose rapidly during the recent floods. In some areas, the river surged by 26 feet in just 45 minutes, according to news reports. Some gauges even showed a rise of 20 feet in less than two hours, according to CNN. This swift rise in water levels contributed to the widespread damage and loss of life. “

Yes, very sad that assigning blame has to even be a discussion. The reports I have received and from my personal experiences, even if an early warning had been issued, very few would have evacuated. There was no indication except that a heavy Texas rain was coming. No indication that it would reach the levels it did and certainly no one could guess it would be 7" a minute. Think about it folks, almost 3 feet in 5 minutes. No one could predict that, not even in Texas.

I find it sad when politics rule any discussion about a tragic weather event. It seems to me Texas has an amazing network of agencies that respond quick and efficiently. I am sure that in the near future, ways to improve forecasting or rescue efforts will be discussed.

DOGE made cuts to National Weather Service
So what is your point? Non political meteorologist have said that the Texas weather service did an outstanding job.

The NWS office in Austin/San Antonio conducted forecast briefings for emergency management on July 3, issued a Flood Watch at 1:18 p.m., and escalated to Flash Flood Warnings in the night and early morning hours, providing more than three hours' lead time before the flooding reached critical thresholds.

The weather service did its job, perfectly! DOGE cuts had no bearing on this tragedy.

Can we show respect to all those that lost loved ones and leave the politics out of this discussion?

I am sorry so many families have to suffer emotionally, physically, financially and all because of rain. After the rains stop and the flooded areas drain, I guess the bodies will be recovered. All those kids and the poor families that are suffering. I am sure we all feel helpless.

Latest report from a cousin, is the death toll is over 70 and rising. Her grandkids, kids, and husband (retired paramedic) are on horseback, searching areas otherwise inaccessible, except by foot. Other cousins and nephews have taken equipment to areas to help on removal and locating missing.

I watched a news report where they interviewed a man from MercyChefs.com, which is a faith-based, nonprofit organization. They have been providing warm-cooked meals for those in need these past couple of days and those working in that flooded area. I checked, and they have a high rating on Charity Navigator, (96%) which means they are a highly trust-worthy group. It makes me feel good that they are involved. I think I will pitch in to their organization and help in a small way.

I had a feeling when I first met you that you were special. :)

Mercy Chefs are a wonderful group. I am providing a link that shows other groups helping. My sis and her church group are working in coordination with several groups to provide shelter, food, and clothes to those in need. Things like laundry services become important. All the groups listed in the link are very trustworthy.

How to Help Victims of the Disastrous Texas Floods

I don’t understand why the camp didn’t have a weather radio in every cabin. When we moved to Kansas in 1993 we had a house built and all the kids bedrooms were in the basement. Our bedroom was on the first floor and we found that we were sleeping through tornadoes and terrible storms.

Back then we bought a weather radio, and it would come on very loud and you could hear it throughout the entire two-story house when the weather was bad in your area. It gave you time to get up and get safe.

The weather service's San Angelo office, which is responsible for some of the areas hit hardest by Friday's flooding, was missing a senior hydrologist, staff forecaster and meteorologist in charge, according to Tom Fahy, the legislative director for the National Weather Service Employees Organization.

So we can agree to disagree. And add me to the group of "self-entitled folks" who actually provide facts.
