I got a 800.00 phone bill

Yeats ago, I had a grungy dial phone. So, I decided to super clean underneath the dial. Of course to clean the dial, I had to take the phone receiver off the base. So, I started cleaning under #1, the went around the dial, cleaning away. When I got to "0", I could hear. someone talking, A male voice with a thick accent was asking "Is anybody there? Hello?" I hung up. A month later I got a $8 ( about $40-50, today) bill for calling Liberia ????????
The number I called was 1-213-456-789-0099.

Several years ago, there was an interesting problem with my home phone.
Thankfully it wasn't a long distance calling issue.
A police officer showed up one afternoon to investigate a 911 call from my address.
He said 911 was called from my address but no one spoke on the line.

A week or so later, it happened again. Police showed up in response to 911 call from my address.

So I called the local telephone company to check it out.
Since the trouble call involved the emergency response network, I was moved to the top of the list.
A telephone repairman showed up first thing the very next morning.
Turned out to be a loose wire at the NID (network interface device) on the side of the house.
The loose wire making intermittent contact would dial random numbers ... sometimes 911.
Thing was, my phone was working normally otherwise. Was a weird problem.

Before you remind me that we're in the Humor section, @ohioboy , I'm already aware of that. 😁 But this reminded me of something I had to deal with about 10-12 years ago. I actually did get one of those huge bills and freaked out. After all the waiting and nail-biting, they traced it to some machine somewhere calling a *satellite* and racking up the charges.

At least if it had called Zanzibar, it may have reached a real person! :sneaky:

There was a Twilight Zone episode where an old woman kept getting calls "I need you, where are you"? Turns out a telephone line broke loose and fell onto a headstone in a cemetery, her deceased husbands. Spooky!

Eeeeew! That sounds awful! There was also a short story called "When Michael Calls." At least I read it as a short story a bazillion years ago... I *think* it may have been made into a movie at some point.
