Can you read line five?

If you have to take an eye test to qualify for anything it might pay to look at sample charts ahead of time.
Not to try to memorize the order of the letters on each line but to see what the letters looks like on a snellen eye chart.
That C looks a lot like the letter O and there is a reason for that.
The opening on the side of the C is reduced way past what a standard printed letter C would look like and that added bar at the top of the opening gives the letter a little more bulk to help it look like an O.
Look at how they make the F to try to make it look a lot like the E.
You never see a letter F sitting on a big wide base like that.
Yes! Take that bar at the base and slide it just a little to the side and WOW there’s an E.
So if you have to take the eye test look at the shape of the letters on a sample chart first so that you can find those subtle differences in those letters.
You might notice that they only use certain letters like C and O and there probably won’t be a Q.
Maybe it wasn’t your eyes that tricked you as much as the chart did.

Thanks for these insights, @GP44!

With my left eye, yes. With my right eye, nope. I can't read at all with that eye as I have a dead spot in the middle. It's fine with everything else.
I must have a weak spot in the middle of my eyes too because I can see things better if I turn my head slightly to the right of what I’m looking at.

I have meeting with a consultant next Thursday to see what we should do about a cataract in my right eye.

I needed spectacles from the age of 16, so have gotten used to them. I also wore contact lenses for a time and had no problems with them. I just got tired of having to order them all the time, and the fuss of putting them in, etc.

I have regular checks, and my eyes have gotten significantly worse over the last few appointments. They wanted to check the back of my eye, but found they can't see through the cataract..... so I'll see what to do next.
