I had a look at Facebook today

Must say that the way it operates is detrimental to all the businesses that use it as their web site.
I was thinking about going somewhere different for breakfast this morning and noticed many businesses had Facebook as their only point of contact.
Well we all know that one can view the first page of Facebook without being a member, but any further is out of bounds to non members.
What a backward way of doing business. There would be so many non members unable to view menus and the like that the business will not get their cash.
Case in Point, I was looking at a particular business which I thought I might visit though because I was unable to view their menu I will not be going there to spend my money.
What a crazy business model. The businesses are doing themselves a disservice by using Facebook as their only point of contact.
This is not how Facebook started out, was it?
I thought it was to connect people, all over the world.
Now it is what? Add your own thoughts...

Before Facebook, MySpace was the dominant social media sight. Can't remember if I signed up to it. Never liked it, so when Facebook came along I assumed it was a MySpace competitor and simply ignored it. For what it's worth I have never bought anything online, I may be old school but if there's a hint of scurity risk and giving card details online I consider risky, not for me, thank you.

I have got to the stage of no longer purchasing online.
Scammers are becoming all pervasive and with the advent of AI, how would one know a fake site from the real site?

If you don’t want people to know your business, you don’t put it on Facebook. It really is that simple.
I have been very selective with everyone I am Facebook friends with.
Almost all of them have been in my house and/or I have been in theirs.
You have the power as to who can see your posts and what you choose to post.

Nah... nothing so innocent.
Zuckerberg, while a Harvard sophomore, initially created a website called "Facemash" where students could rate each other's attractiveness.
It gained popularity, evolving into "The Facebook".
THEN it started to connect people all over the world! I think there are over 3 BILLION active users.

I was on the verge of joining Facebook but decided I do not want people to know my business so I never joined
Many people open a FB account with false information to help disguise their identity and then go around trying to convince family and friends that it’s really them.

I use it to keep in touch with family and a few old friends.

I rarely post anything and mainly use the messenger feature to have a few conversations.

FB is what you choose to make it.

You might be able to use a search engine to find their menu without fb.

There's risk offline too if someone has a reader within 3 ft of you.

I also had my phone number stolen that way.

Got a new laptop recently and got a bit flustered and excited with it and was sorta jumping from sites to sites - my facebook membership had sorta lapsed and they said atm you are banned for too much fast movement - wot a hoot - did you know there are at least 12-15 sites all similar to fb and do the same thing - communication thats all??

yes I agree... It actually does annoy me that many business, FB is their only point of contact. I just don't use them.. which is a shame.. but any one who doesn't have a legit website is not a company I want to use

Oddly, I was listening to NPR on my car radio yesterday, and they were interviewing a guy who had built careers for others, I remember that he was credited for bringing Lady Ga Ga to the public. I didn't recognize the others they named. They spent a lot of time talking about advertising, and specifically mentioned facebook. He called it a source of the past, but something that is no longer economically viable as a way of increasing business.

I wasn't paying close attention, because I'm not interested in selling anything or selling myself, but that one thing jumped out at me, because I was under the understanding that many people were getting rich off of selling themselves on the internet. Also, I think facebook is stupid and shallow, so it maybe rang my confirmation bias bell.

Same here... family and a few old friends. Sometimes I'm contacted with "hey, are you the Kate I went to school with?!" and I totally ignore it and never answer. My thought is (wouldn't say it, of course!) "yeah, I am, but I didn't talk to you for 12 years in school and I'm not going to start now." 🤭 I list no location, no email, no phone number.

I closed my Facebook account a decade ago because of security concerns. I still on occasion get reminders on my phone of someone's birthday. It's like I can't escape it. 🤷‍♀️

In the area I live now most of the local businesses are on Facebook and from time to time I consider opening another Facebook account but so far I have avoided that temptation.

Facebook exists for one reason, to collect data on you. Don't give them any. Don't post information about yourself like schools, jobs. Don't answer polls about anything like your first car or pets names. Don't post photos of yourself or loved ones. This is all stuff scammers can use to make themselves more believable. Especially with the advances AI is making, this is all gold to them. Of course I would say that about any social media platform.

Facebook is where everyone wishes you a happy birthday but if they see you out and about, they ignore you. Where are my 178 friends when I am feeling sorry for myself because I have nothing to do.
