Grandchildren with Special Needs?

My daughter's SO is father to two teenage boys with Microcephaly. Random question but, I want to crochet them some warm socks for Christmas. Do you think that would be an appropriate, welcomed gift? I don't want to ask DD or him as I want it to be a surprise.
Any other ideas for future?

Why wouldn't socks be appropriate? I don't know anything about microcephaly, sorry.
