Is anyone else receiving these types of texts?

Well, first off I'm sorry I ever donated to a specific political party before the election because at least once a day I receive a text begging for money. I just Junk and Delete these days.

But what's been really curious lately is that I receive cryptic texts along the lines of "Do you want to meet at the park?" or "How do you like living in Dallas?". They are not explicit but they are personal. Hubby confirmed that he's been receiving these types of texts as well. They aren't as frequent as the political texts but they are annoying.

Anyone else?

I have received open ended texts before, years ago I would text "wrong number". Today block block block. Both political parties texted a lot last election cycle. Block block block. Personal data can be easily found on the internet these days unless you do some extra work to be mostly invisible.

I don't do anything with money or credit cards on my smartphone, only my home desktop computer.

So, I only occasionally get a spam text, and I immediately delete. If I got any that asked personal questions like that, I would block that number for sure.

I haven't received any spam emails asking for political money either, I think shortly after I donated to a party I received one email that said I could unsubscribe from any other communications, I did, no issue at all since. Hope you can stop these texts, does not sound good at all, good luck.

When you pay for purchases by card, phone or any device other than cash, you get profiled. The profiles are bought and sold until there is a mass of information about you. Someone, somewhere has learned of your cell phone number. It will end when you change your number, go ex-directory (meaning nobody has access to your phone number,) and pay for all future purchases in cash.

Thank you. Yes, I've read that even World Central Kitchen to whom I've donated many times gives away information. Very disappointing.

If I don't know the name, whether text or call, block is my first response. Anyone I want to receive from I have ringtones individually for, and a neutral ringtone for any businesses I deal with so I know those are known.
I have received a couple text say (first part of my email addy) Hey XXXX I can see you! Hi XXXX I remember you! That's been a few months back and nothing since.

My phone is programmed to only accept calls from someone on my Contacts list. Otherwise the call is listed, but the phone never rings. I do get texts I mostly just ignore. They are usually asking for donations or political support. I can put those numbers on the Blocked list if they get annoying enough.

This thread reminds me of a very strange Reddit post I saw the other day from someone who kept receiving multiple messages from an AI egg (?!).

I don't think you need a Reddit account to view the post, but just in case I've added a screenshot in addition to the URL. The original post was about 4 pages of very odd-sounding texts.

@seadoug Have you ever considered using Google Voice ? I've been using it for years for such situations. It assigns you a second phone number which you can use on your cell phone. I use the assigned GV number when I have to provide a phone number to business's and organizations that I don't want to hear back from. I select the option to get no notifications from the app so I have no idea who calls or sends texts to the assigned second number unless I open up the app. The only downside is I have to actively use that number once a month or I lose that number. Usually I just send a text to my real phone number once a month so I don't lose that phone number.

If you are leery of using a Google product, there are similar apps available on both the Android and on the Apple app store. The plus to Google Voice is there are no ads on the app. Most others do have ads when you open up the app. Just a suggestion !

I had the same experience with World Central Kitchen. It's something fairly new, I think, because I had been donating for a while, yet I think the passing out (selling?) of info is only the past year or so.

I agree, very disappointing.

I haven't received suggestive personal texts. I have received obvious spam texts, but I just ignore them. I used to block them, but I don't bother anymore since most of the numbers we see are SMS spoofing (bogus phone numbers) and blocking doesn't accomplish anything. The most that would do would prevent them from sending another using the same bogus number, but would not prevent them from getting through if using a new bogus number.

I wasn't even aware this existed. Thanks for the tip!

@seadoug You started something :mad:

A couple days ago I received a "So how are you tonight?" from who knows where, then yesterday a "Elite singles says we're a match. Want to chat? No pressure." One was from Indiana. Don't remember if I checked the area code from the other one. 🤣

I've never received any texts like that, but if I did, I'd probably think (at least at first) that they sent it to the wrong person. Getting more than one or two would concern me, but there's always mark as spam and delete, which prevents receiving more of those texts.

Creepy. Just keep blocking and hope they'll go away.

It may be part of phishing or something more surreptitious at an attempt to get the recipient to bite and meet up, which is very dangerous.
Child predators were doing something similar around 2000. I would be careful and if you can’t block or put the sender on ignore or spam, I would delete the texts until they stop.
