When women walk by, men whistle? Compliment or insult?

To whistle is low class and subordinate, and what does the man expect the woman to do in return? She has about 3 resonable choices: ignore it, smile back, or show disgust. Neither party gains anything longterm, so it's sort of pointless.

I'd probably figure some cute young woman must be in the vicinity. Any "communication" to me from strangers is usually along the lines of, "Do you need any help, ma'am?" I always say no thank you, but privately feel annoyed. Geez. do they think I'm an old lady or something?

People now help me as they see I don't walk very well. I am glad of it and grateful.
But I feel a grief inside that I am no longer the woman I was, I am old and my joints are stiff. The clock can never be turned back.

You are correct, and I don't mind that if it means we get more human respect. But I have to add, as an old white-haired lady, everyone always lets me get on the bus first, which I like.

all of which sounds good to me - everyone should open doors for anyone who needs help (aged, disabled, parent with pram, person carrying things etc) regardless of gender, I don't see why ladies need to go first on anything and men and women both have their own money now so both should pay for things.
