Do you have Dental Implants? Please tell me your story.

Our neighbour has recently had top and bottom implants , he’s a single man in mid 40’s and we’ve known him about 6 ~ 7 years since he moved into a rental next to us ..he’s since bought the home and we are happy about that , anyway he had teeth but they were black and he was embarrassed about smiling 😊..so he told us , he withdrew $40.000 from his superannuation to have his teeth fixed , I asked him if he can “feel the implants “ and he said yes especially when it’s cold outside ( We only get down to about 8c in winter here in Australia)

He's such a nice gentle tall man he’s now got himself a girlfriend in the last 6 months 20 years younger than himself cause he looks very different with nice white teeth

They both work away one week on one off …

Terry, are you saying the top denture will stay in place without implants? I have a tori on the roof of my mouth, thus the reason dentist say implants. I cannot use the full denture. My upper denture needs to be U-shape.
Yes the suction holds my top denture in without polident. I don’t know what a Tori is.

Thanks Terry. A Tori is a bony like structure on the gums. It can be anywhere on the gums. Some people have it on side gums, or lower gums, etc. It is not a common thing.
---Mine is on the roof of my mouth, which means a normal set of dentures will not be suitable for me. Mine is not painful.
---This is why I must have a U-shape denture of some sort.
---I included a pic, which I got from the web. It explains it very well. It is very similar to what I have.

Then it sounds like you can’t have the top piece of the denture which is what allows the suction to hold it in. A regular denture is u shaped but covers the roof of your mouth.

On the funny note... In the last Godzilla movie, the monster gets a dental implant and toothache
Takes only a minute and he's okay. The other monsters laugh! Man uses a helicopter to approach his
Mouth but no reason is given. I told my dentist.

Also....if you unscramble dental spa= spend a lot.
Seriously, do not confuse implants with dentures, that are removeable

Getting the implanted anchors put in for two of my teeth next Tuesday. Will have to wait 6 months and then I will get the artificial teeth attached. The whole process takes nearly a full year start to finish!

Update: All your comments have been helpful in my decision of having implants. I thank you all!!!

It’s been 9 months since I originally posted the discussion question.

It seemed like my only option was to get the Tori grounded down, so I could wear traditional dentures. Dates were set. But then a death in the family occurred, and my life went on hold, which included my teeth.

Once things settled down, I went for another appt with surgeon. Shockingly, he told me that my Tori wasn’t that bad and I could use a full denture, without grinding it down. This is the complete opposite of what the dentist was telling me for yrs. I was so delighted that I hugged him.

Last month my teeth were pulled and I received my denture. I have full suction around my Tori. I cannot tell you how pleased I am that I did not have to get any grinding or implants.

Again, thank you all for your input!

Vicky, thank you for telling us your story.
This is such a positive outcome.

And it was an invaluable reassurance for my former decision to get a full upper denture.

I'll get all my upper teeth extracted in mid October. But I didn't opt for temporary dentures, since I want to wait for some months until the healing process is done.

Then I'll receive my permanent full upper denture. I hope that I'll be as pleased as you.

The four front teeth (incisors) in my lower jaw must be pulled too. There I'll get a bridge. This is a good and especially affordable alternative to implants which I don't like.

It's no problem that the two adjacent teeth are damaged to install the bridge, since in future I can opt for complete lower dentures too.

Many people can even manage lower full dentures by using 'Cushion Grip', 'Densurefit' or 'Denttach', the thermoplastic denture reliners and adhesives.

My Dentist said that if you don’t wear a temporary denture, your gums get into such a weird shape that you won’t be able to wear any type of denture after a few months. I would definitely discuss this with your Dentist.

I had to have a bottom denture while I was waiting for six months to heal before I could have the implants and it was totally miserable. No amount of denture adhesive or any other type of cushion grip kept the denture in place. It was very difficult to eat, and it hopped up and down when I would talk and laugh after a while. It was so bad that I carried around denture adhesive in my purse so I could go to a bathroom and re-glue it in all the time when I was out in public.

Thank you very much. This is really helpful. I'll discuss it as soon as possible with the dental clinic.

A temporary denture is not such expensive (400 Euro), that I couldn't afford it.

But I'd have to drive 20 miles every time I have problems with sore spots. And I think there will be many during the first weeks.

But if such problems can arise, I'll go with temps. And there will be no 'sunken face' look if I have them.

You’re right that you will have a lot of sore spots in the beginning and have them ground down. It’s so important to have the temporary dentures that they put the temps in and tell you to leave them right after pulling your teeth.

It’s really uncomfortable because your gums hurt so bad from just having your teeth pulled. I only lasted a few hours and then I had to take them out until the next morning. You do remove them at night because your gums need air in order to heal.

I also found that if I don’t have my top denture in people have difficulty understanding my conversation. I found that out a few times when I tried to answer the phone without my teeth in. Also dogs love false teeth because they smell like food. So if you take them out, make sure they’re high enough that your dog cannot get them They will chew your teeth and ruin them.
